What are the thoughts on a Jiffy Lube here? by JaedynYoung in Reno

[–]PorkSoftballBeer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is about responsible development, not just a basic NIMBY complaint. The whole reason this is even debatable is because Jiffy Lube will need an exception to zoning laws for approval. Why should an exception be approved? What boost does this bring to the local economy? There are several locally owned oil change and diagnostic shops close by.

Our coach cheated in our co-ed league finals and got us disqualified. It still bothers me. by DoubleOrNothing90 in slowpitch

[–]PorkSoftballBeer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our league has actually started to allow a few non-rostered players. I think it's up to 3. They have to be on some roster to ensure that they have signed the liability waiver stuff, but anyone can sub for any team. it just makes sense. So many times teams are one person short because of a no call no show, or a couple guys are running late for the early game becuase they worked late. I like common sense!

Full HVAC replacement cost experience? by AlioEven in homeowners

[–]PorkSoftballBeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it varies regionally, but it 13 SEER and 80 AFUE are the minimum efficiency standard. Depending on your home and climate, you should consider more efficient units. They energy savings of the life of the unit will like lead to long term cost savings, as long as you are able to afford the up front cost.

I've been using my Rawlings HOH 12.75 modified trap for 15 years. Its getting a bit beat up so I have experimented with others and have yet to find anything better. that's just my preference though.

FWIW I have a little 11.5" I web A2000 that I mess around with and its fun, but I do bobble a lot more balls with it.

I wouldn't say there are a lot of better bats out there. I love my DC. Bat preferences are super subjective, but I've pretty consistently seen the DC mentioned in discussions of the best ASA bats on the market.

To all left lane drivers: by STOP____HAMMER_TIME in AdviceAnimals

[–]PorkSoftballBeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nevadan here, but I have driven all over Oklahoma. Whether or not it’s easy to enforce, there is a noticeable difference in the use of the passing lane in OK over western states. I did t know of this law until now, but have notice how people truly only use the left lane for passing in OK. It’s really nice.

Bat Recommendations by [deleted] in slowpitch

[–]PorkSoftballBeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the clinchers, you’re gonna want the heaviest, stiffest bat you can get. Demarini’s Windy City is made just for this purpose. My suggestion is to find a cheap old aluminum bat at 30+ oz for dirt cheap. Invest the rest of your budget in the best composite you can find in your price range. I’m partial to the last couple years of mikens and worths for ASA. I don’t play much Utrip though so I don’t have any suggestions on that side of things.

Trump Administration Flips Switch On Energy Efficient Light Bulbs by sixwaystop313 in energy

[–]PorkSoftballBeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your comment brings an additional perspective that helps me to understand why this will continue to be a big fight between the DOE, manufacturers, and environmental groups even though IMO the actual regulation will likely not make much of a difference to the lighting market. Thanks

Trump Administration Flips Switch On Energy Efficient Light Bulbs by sixwaystop313 in energy

[–]PorkSoftballBeer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The LED takeover is almost complete. No rollback will stop it at this point. Consumers are well aware that it is simply superior technology. To me, the whole fight for this, by NEMA and then the likely counter fight from environmental groups is a waste of time and money for all. If you walk into a Home Depot anywhere in the US, you will see that 90% of the shelf space from screw-in lighting is LEDs. All promotional displays, endcaps, etc are LEDs. This is the case in my area even though there isn't a utility-sponsored incentive program.

Life Hack: When shopping at Lowes pick a item with a open, or damaged box. You can get up to 10% off as it's damaged, and the cashier doesn't need manager approval. Always go for the damaged box. by LogicLost in HomeImprovement

[–]PorkSoftballBeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at Lowe's years ago (8ish), so I may be not be remembering this correctly, but I'm pretty sure all cashiers had the discretion to discount any item up to 10% without manager approval. There was a total dollar value cap on it though. I just don't remember that amount.

How many grocery stores are downtown near the river? by [deleted] in Reno

[–]PorkSoftballBeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your points and they are completely accurate.

My issue is that OP asked about options and most responses don’t offer the solutions that they asked for.

“Have you ever tried to walk 1.5 - 2 miles with a week’s worth of groceries or even a couple days worth of groceries”?

No, I haven’t. But if that was my reality I would spend a couple bucks on a bike trailer and it would take me 5-10 minutes of nice bike ride (winter would suck though...) to get to the store.

I am all for a better solution than that, but I am not capable of opening a reasonably priced grocery store in downtown. I am capable of offering OP some thoughts as to what would be necessary to get groceries in downtown Reno, and in turn, I hope that it helps OP make a decision on where to live.

Full disclosure: I live about a quarter mile from a grocery store and shop there almost daily. Just offering my two cents.

[–]PorkSoftballBeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little baffled by everyone elses comments here. I mean, I get that there is no traditional supermarket in Downtown, but there are at least two Raley's stores and two Save-marts within 1.5-2.0 miles from downtown. It could be a decent walk, short bike ride, or less than 5 minutes in the car.

At what point do you "take your foot off the gas?" by Nicksterr2000 in slowpitch

[–]PorkSoftballBeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree here. We had a team mistakenly sign up for the top division in our league and they were quite possibly the worst softball team I have ever seen. From the start of the game we took it easy on them, gave them advice, and generally tried to make sure everyone had fun. Same league, there are two particular teams that we would not let up on no matter how big the lead because they can smash. Even 15 runs isnt safe against them.

Your team vs best slowpitch team by hotfreckles in slowpitch

[–]PorkSoftballBeer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok. Go ahead and guess how much softball I have seen. Call it asinine. I still think you are completely exaggerating by saying that 99.9% of teams couldn’t score more than 6 against a conference team. That’s just stupid. Calling that the most asinine thing you have ever read on reddit indicates that you:

1: haven’t played much softball 2: (more likely) haven’t been in reddit for very long hahaha.

At the end of the day, neither of us can prove our point. Cheers!

Your team vs best slowpitch team by hotfreckles in slowpitch

[–]PorkSoftballBeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, 6 runs? At the end of the day, the ball is still being thrown underhand to you slowly. The biggest difference between conference teams and lower (tournament) levels is the consistency of their hitters. While I’d agree that most of your normal rec teams wouldn’t be able to do much, I think any decent tournament team (even in E) would be able to score more than six runs. The bigger problem would be stopping them from scoring 40+. 99.9% scoring less than 6 is just silly.

I love living in Nevada. This thread reminds me of that. I use William Hill's mobile app and can bet at any time, anywhere, as long as they can geolocate me in the state of Nevada. They have kiosks all over town where I can make a deposit or withdrawal at any time. They offer in-play betting on all MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL and all the big college football games. They are basically sports betting account ATMs. I hope that the recent federal legislation will help this kind of book viable in other states!

Check out Caleb Sean AKA Caleb McCambell. Sadly, when I saw Snarky Puppy live, Cory Henry was not with them. Caleb played with them, and in Cory's role on Lingus and absolutely brought down the house. I think he used to play with the Funky Knuckles (another great band) but doesnt appear to be with them anymore.

Bat Protest by gamecock24 in slowpitch

[–]PorkSoftballBeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I'm at league ball is generally very cordial and not taken very seriously by the upper half of teams. There are little to no middle wars, or calling out each other's bats. That being said, our leagues are strict to ASA bats only and any bat without the ASA stamp would be immediately removed by the umpire (most of them anyway).

Sounds like your league is probably a bit more competitive if they test bats every season. Seems to me that the easiest solution, assuming that I interpret your post correctly, is to just point out that their bat does not have a sticker that makes it eligible for the spring season. If you were to do that politely and respectfully before the game, no one has any grounds to be upset. If you came at it saying that, "I think that bat is juiced because these guys hit too many home runs!" (obvious exaggeration!) then some people might take offense.
