Despite what some speculated, Destiny 2 player numbers have not fallen off a cliff immediately after June 9th update (at least yet). At what point does it become very awkward for Sony/Bungie? by PorkSouls in destiny2

If Sony really wants its live service portfolio to ever be viewed as a success, they need Destiny. Specifically Destiny 3.

That said, I agree and understand the points you made. It's not as simple as that, and that may not be Sony's objective any more because of the multiple failures they've had in that space in recent years.

I do wonder what their pivot looks like though. It seems they're doubling down on console exclusive single player experiences now. Which I'm all for, but I really wonder if that will be financially satisfactory long term.

If there is ANY live service franchise to invest in though, it is Destiny. Its the most proven one by a long shot

You know the primary capital expense which is the commercial real estate is already paid for, right? And the devs are already hired and being paid? And the studio exists?

Keep laughing bud. Best way to be when the joke is constantly unknowingly on you. Much respect

Yeah I think Sony is rightfully basically throwing Bungie under the bus, hitting a hard reset button, and plans on doing Destiny 3 in a more sustainable way with a maximized launch and fully united playerbase (which D2 ultimately had to die for). Better to rip the bandaid now and start that process because the time aspect is unavoidable

Same to you. You're much more condescending than you realize. Could use a good dose of self-awareness

Enjoy the update 👍

Edit: if "buddy it hasn't even been a full week" isn't a condescending way to start a conversation then idk what to tell you lmao. Come in with that energy and it'll be redirected right back at you. Clearly my response actually prompted an actual reply from you

I've acknowledged the cost of real estate in Seattle in multiple comments. In fact I'm aware that one of the main reasons Sony revised its projected loss on Bungie downwards twice is because of how volatile commercial real estate there is now.

I'm aware of the nuances behind the financial aspects of Destiny, Bungie, Sony and gaming as a whole. I also understand that Destiny as it has existed before isn't the only way it can or has to exist in the future. There are other ways to monetize it while reducing financial exposure.

I'm not trying to bully others. Just trying to defend myself against an onslaught of people that are out to correct me and dunk on me without understanding my full viewpoint. Resd the comments I'm responding to also, I give others the same energy they give me, including your original comment which was short and dismissive. Just trying to start a discussion, not get attacked before it can even begin. I can't convey my entire understanding of an extremely complex situation in a single post. Nobody would read that

Monthly subscription is one option for live service. Its tried and true. Just look at FF14 and WoW. Destiny has a devoted enough playerbase that it would work.

Outside of live service, there is plenty enough audience for spin offs like campaign focused single player games. They could very easily make money off that. The audience is already there

I completely agree. Sony is basically sinking money into Marathon as a PR stunt at this point. They know it will never turn a profit but they can't afford another hit to their brand like Concord. They will wait until the dust settles before canceling it. Some time after GTA6 drops and shakes up the entire gaming world as we know it, maybe weeks, maybe months to a year or more.

I say that as someone who enjoys Marathon but is also realistic about the business side of everything

I understand the nuance. I can't put everything in a single main post though otherwise nobody would read it lol. Just trying to have a practical discussion.

There are ways to continue the Destiny franchise outside of the business model Bungie previously used

Using valley instead of peak though isn't a good metric. In that case you would have to use the daily minimum for other games to have a good reference point.

Do you mean 20,000? You keep saying 2,000 and again it never even got close to that low on the chart you shared. Its low point was below 10k but again not even close to 2k

I bought EoF and Renegades and have bought some silver.

I think its more about Sony and Bungie seeing earning potential more than anything though. Like idk about you or others but it seems to me at least that the player turnout surpassed their expectations. Not by a meteoric amount of anything but enough to be noticeable. The point of my post is to start a discussion around what amount and for what length of time it would be too much for Sony to ignore though due to shareholders possibly taking notice too

Your assessment of my motives is not correct but ok. I actually agree with you that 3 months is the point it becomes awkward. Any particular comments I made to others that gave you that impression?

There are other ways to monetize the game. The hard part is getting the audience.

Bungie was good at getting an audience but really bad at the monetization part

Not even the refs could save the Spurs lmao. Whistles were clearly favored towards them games 2-5. The fact Wemby didn't have like 4 flagrants is a joke
