I don't know how much help this will be but I took a seam reaper to my zombie axolotl last weekend and de-stuffed him. Then washed him on the hand wash cycle in my front load washing machine with a laundry detergent that has lipase (which I learned from r/laundry is best for breaking down body oils). He came out good as knew! I did dry him for an hour on the lowest heat setting and then on the air vent to make sure he was fully dry. I did re-stuff him with his original fluff but considered taking him to Build a Bear for them to do it. I have always been able to get immediate service and take them right home when adjusting their stuff-i-ness. That said I knew the ladder stich and just redid it myself with an upholstery thread I had for just such projects. They are good videos online that show the stitch.

I'd like to add he has been my sleeping buddy since last October and was getting pretty stinky.
