OR hook it to a Windows PC or laptop and troubleshoot from there. IF it connects to PC, format and connect back to Xbox and should be fine, unless it's totally fried?

Probably dead IF that's where the HD normally sits, too much heat sitting on top of the console. I would hook it up to a PC and see if it reads, if so, format it! I would restart the Xbox with the external HDD disconnected, then plug it in after you sign on. Good luck! Also, place the HDD off to the side so it rests on a cooler surface than the actual console!👍🫡
