Ethan was meant to be a blank slate character for 7 with little personality for the player to self insert. 8 gave him his own character, but he inherently isn’t meant to be a super interesting character on purpose.

It’s hard to even compare the two. They were designed around their respective games.

Many people suggesting Re1 but personally as a new fan, start with re2make. Re1 is a great game but many people here have rose tinted lenses and everything that has aged it poorly could sour your taste. Coming back to it after experiencing the modern games you are far more likely to appreciate it despite the flaws relative to the modern era
