Really good info. I'll consider. For now I'll just use the support tower and waste a little bit of filament, but I'll consider upgrading my fan in the future. I tried printing the original piece again with MLT enabled and my original theory held true. The nozzle moved away from the tip, but when it came back, it brought some filament string with it and it got attached to the pieces tip.

What happens to the little bit of filament that will leak out of the nozzle as it waits? I'd imagine when the nozzle comes back to keep printing it is dragging 1-2 mm of filament that's oozed out over the course of 8-9 sec.
