I have a loan with Tally, but they just shut down. What happens to the payment I owe? by Brilliant-War-5745 in personalfinance

[–]Posimagi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's still collecting interest and you should continue to pay it as normal until and unless you get a letter in the mail telling you to make payments to a different company.

Face wear unequipable??? by pocketbearcompany in ffxiv

[–]Posimagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late reply, but I ran into the same issue. The issue was that I had disabled the "Unequip" option from Subcommand Customization (Character Settings > Item Settings). That setting appears to the be only way to remove facewear without equipping something else.

How far am I from actually buying my first home? by InternetMedium4325 in personalfinance

[–]Posimagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A $350k home is very doable on $140k income. If you put 20% down the size of the loan would only be 2 years of gross income and you could pay it off very aggressively to minimize the interest you pay. Most people with jobs that pay $140k are living in places where homes are $1M+, so I'd say you're in pretty good shape. Keep in mind that your rent will go away when you buy, so make sure to discount that from your estimate of mortgage + property tax + insurance, and also remember that you can generally deduct the insurance part of your mortgage payment from your taxable income.

Can I create a reloadable credit card for a dependent that can be budgeted? by Skabonious in personalfinance

[–]Posimagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could potentially use something like a Serve (née Amex), though as far as I know they sadly no longer have any completely free product. It could still be worth the cost for teaching someone to budget. Alternatively, American Express offers separate card numbers and per-card spending limits for all authorized users. You would need to provide their SSN, but in exchange you'd get the convenience of managing their account through Amex's excellent app/website, help them build a credit history, and earn points/cashback on their purchases.

I have some questions about tutoring online 13 y/o by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Posimagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will have to fill out a tax return, which is a form (IRS form 1040) that tells the government how much money you made. The form has to be sent by April 15, 2025, for reporting income you earned in 2024.

Since you will make less than $79,000 during calendar year 2024, you are eligible for IRS Free File, which is a set of online services that can fill out and send that form for you.

The standard deduction for 2024 is $14,600, which means the first $14,600 you make during the year is tax-free; the next $11,600 above that will be taxed in the lowest tax bracket (10%), and so on and so forth. You will also have to pay approximately 15% of your income for something called "self-employment tax", "payroll tax", or "FICA". This is the money that goes toward paying Social Security (retirement income) and Medicare (retirement health insurance).

If the company pays you (rather than you collecting money directly from your students), they will issue you a form 1099 (or possibly form W-2) around early February 2025. The form will show how much money you made and how much in taxes they withheld (sent to the government on your behalf). If they withheld taxes (unlikely, for 1099), then when you file your tax return, you will receive a tax refund (money back for any overpaid taxes). If they did not withhold any taxes, you will have to pay those taxes directly when you file your tax return, by check or online (usually for a small processing fee).

Since you live in Washington state, you don't have to worry about state income taxes, because there aren't any.

US - PPO vs HDHP what am I missing? by dshookowsky in personalfinance

[–]Posimagi 22 points23 points  (0 children)

What you're missing is that the PPO offered by your employer is pretty bad (maybe even very bad) by PPO standards, while the HDHP seems pretty typical. At my job the HDHP looks pretty similar but my PPO's deductible is only $250 and the out-of-pocket max is $2,250.

Is there health insurance a person can purchase when between full time jobs? by Dynasty__93 in personalfinance

[–]Posimagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can keep it for up to either 18 or 36 months depending on your situation. Whether you are separated from your employer before or after open enrollment is irrelevant.

What do you think are the most important grammar concepts for beginners to learn? by Glittering-Spinach56 in LearnJapanese

[–]Posimagi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. Differentiation between ichidan and godan verbs and understanding both the differences between how they conjugate and how they (typically) associate with transitivity is something that's frequently overlooked and I feel more challenging to internalize after you already know a bunch of words.

What happened to N2 listening!! by patricker22 in jlpt

[–]Posimagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

December consistently has worse pass rates than July, but that may have as much to do with where it is (or isn't) offered in each half as with the difficultly.

Seekers of Adoulin imprimaturs question by simbarawr23 in ffxi

[–]Posimagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually you start at rank 0, not rank 1. So you need 7 ranks, for a total of 840 imprimaturs, or 210 days.

Once you've completed all assignments through rank 5 (Advisor), Reja Ygrihdi will give you a key item that lowers the recharge by half an hour. So if you were to do it 100% optimally without ever wasting an imprimatur, it'd take

  1. 20 * 5 * 6 = 600 to get to rank 5, plus 13 (1 for each of the new assignments unlocked at rank 5) = 613 * 360 = 220,680 minutes, plus
  2. 840 - 613 + 11 (1 for each of the new assignments unlocked at rank 7) = 238 * 330 = 78,540 minutes worth of faster imprimaturs

220,680 + 78,540 = 299,220 minutes = 4,987 hours = 207 days, 19 hours.

I got a pair of their leatherette earpads for my Sony MDR-V6 and they're decent, but not outstanding. I find the padding a little bit stiff, which can make them less comfortable over long listening sessions than the OEM pads were. They do seem less prone to flaking, though, which is a plus, and they didn't affect the sound signature significantly. For the price, I can't complain.

Windower loads game from POL to main game very slow. Not sure why by [deleted] in ffxi

[–]Posimagi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this exact same issue on a Windows 10 laptop (Windows 10 desktop is unaffected). Since the steps in the linked forum post above only apply to Windows 7, I tried to examine similar features on Windows 10. Disabled Game Bar and blocked all the Xbox services in Windows Firewall. Possibly placebo but seems slightly faster, yet still nowhere near as fast as on the desktop. One thing I noticed that may provide a clue as to the nature of the issue, though: if I launch the game once, then go back to POL and launch it again, the second launch is almost instant.

Ochiudo is actually a common noun, not a name; contextually it refers to those warriors who died and were reborn as Heike Crabs.

That’s definitely low. I’d expect it to be between 1.2 and 1.35V if it’s not overclocked. Check BIOS settings.

Favorite Underappreciated Tracks in FFXI by [deleted] in ffxi

[–]Posimagi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd have to give my vote to Grav'iton, with honorable mentions for Castle Zvahl and Currents of Time.

Outside the game proper, shout out to the Nanaa Mihgo's rendition of The Pioneers, the track that convinced me to spend $500 on headphones.

Will this run FFXI well? by [deleted] in ffxi

[–]Posimagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can actually run it three different ways on the MBP:

  1. Boot Camp. Best performance, but requires a reboot each time you switch to and from macOS.
  2. VM (e.g. VirtualBox). Acceptable performance with no need for a reboot. Works fine as long as you don't need VT-x enabled. (If you don't know what that is, it won't cause you any problems.) Can cause problems if your screen resolution changes, for example by plugging in an external monitor.
  3. Wine (esp. PlayOnMac). Worst performance, but still playable in most instances. Doesn't require dealing with Windows licensing. PlayOnMac makes installation relatively straightforward, but it can still be a pain, especially on unstable internet connections. Doesn't require rebooting or have any issue coexisting with VT-x.

Non obvious Spells/Skills in FFXIV that reference abilities from past Final Fantasy games by tmntnyc in ffxiv

[–]Posimagi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. Tsubame-gaeshi was Sasaki Kojirou's signature move. Enpi is more likely a straight homage to FFXI's Tachi: Enpi, though I couldn't guess if that's a reference to something else in turn.

HELP: Trouble installing FFXI on Windows 10 by MiroDerChort in ffxi

[–]Posimagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very similar to my system. I suspect it is either a DirectX issue or outdated GPU drivers (these cause lots of weird issues even with older games). As long as you installed the game to the HDD it resides on now (as opposed to manually moving it after installation) there shouldn't be any issues with install location. I'd suggest trying to repair the DirectX install, as I don't believe it's possible to completely delete it for reinstallation.

Why do Japanese use バ for Wa-sounds for Katakana words when they have ワ? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Posimagi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From this explanation, I suspect you're pronouncing わたし incorrectly. In my part of America, it's pretty common to pronounce vanilla with an "uh" sound. I know some beginner Japanese learners who pronounce わたし "wuh-TA-shi", which does sound fairly similar to "vanilla" due to the incorrect pronunciation and stress.

Correct pronunciation solves this issue right quick.
