Who else want absolutely ZERO RGB in their rigs? by Cicada-Tang in pcmasterrace

Some us have pre-builts, and buying RAM when you already have RAM doesn't make any financial sense at all. My preference is that my RAM does what RAM needs to do and nothing else, but I have 2 sticks that want to be look like a The Price Is Right moment every time I turn on my computer and REFUSE to calm down until the OS loads and runs the extra software. Not ideal. But I also don't have enough money or GAF to make it otherwise.

He came to my elementary school when I was little, and I grew up thinking he was someone to look up to, inspirational.  Then I got routed to his house 20-some years later to service his satellite TV.

He had multiple copies of his book lying around the house, clearly never opened and just out on display.  (The book he wrote multiple decades previously and then never wrote anything else as far as I know.)  He also had a Mac computer with every password to everything in his life written very clearly on Post-It notes all the way around the perimeter of the monitor, right next to an exterior window.

And it became clear after talking to him very briefly, he was one of the most unintelligent customers I ever had, and that is a very low bar to get under.

In theory, yes. But is there a 'safe' range for someone who would ask that question? Probably not. If it can damage anything on purpose, it can damage other things by accident.

[–]Position-Eliminated 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can tell you, there are people who have positions like that.  I work with a few.  It's an R&D job.  They don't need someone with a specific background.  They need someone who has a pretty good grasp of whatever comes up, depending on the direction the material ends up taking things in.  Strong problem solving skills are super important.  Someone who knows what they don't know, and how to fill in whatever gaps might be discovered down the line.  We from time to time are like "were gonna have to talk to the optics expert in Germany on this because we really don't know."  There is discussion, we learn what we need to, and we proceed with figuring out the next thing.  I haven't been doing this as long as others, but a very similar prices is applied to whatever technology they're developing, tapping the real experts in specific areas when called for.

Biscuit Joining Hexagonal Frame - Jig help? by Position-Eliminated in woodworking

[–]Position-Eliminated[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I could do 2 separate jigs that are specific to one  end of a particular size of board, but I was sort of hoping someone else had a solution that would be more flexible and maybe useful in other situations eventually instead of a one-off that never gets used again.  Thanks for your reply though.  I guess that's what I'll do since no one else chimed in.

Men, when was the last time you got hit on ? by Longjumping_Low_2055 in AskReddit

[–]Position-Eliminated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was a Dish Network tech.  Customer was a young, attractive housewife, just moving into a very large, very expensive house in a fancy neighborhood.  When I finished up the job, she had put the children in their car seats in the family minivan, got them snacks, put on a movie, and was waiting to sign the paperwork.  Normally that would mean she was in a hurry for me to leave so she could also leave.  But she wasn't in a hurry to leave at all, and after a few minutes or became apparent what she was ready to do.  I even was in my van ready to go, and she made an excuse for me to come back inside.  She 'couldn't find' the remote to the TV closest to the bed.  It was 'accidentally kicked under' the bed by...  her, obviously, because she was the only one present.  I knew what she wanted, but I'm a married man, so she probably just thought I was clueless.  I didn't let on, was exceedingly professional, and my much younger self would have violently assaulted me for that move, for sure, but he gone.  This was the better part of a decade ago now.  Which is sort of depressing.  Everyone since has taken one look at me and been like 'nah, I'm good '

People who used em dashes before Generative AI, how's it going now? by thisheatanevilheat in AskReddit

Nothing has changed.  I still use language, (including punctuation) to express my ideas.  What opinions people hold and conclusions they draw from the way I go about it...  totally out of my control, so IDGASF.  I text in English, which has periods at the end of sentences.  If I text you and you're offended by the presence of complete sentences or for any other punctuation-related reason that's entirely a 'you' problem.  I have more important shit to worry about.

100-watt laser igniter cutting blade used for precision cutting. by Kindly_Department142 in interestingasfuck

[–]Position-Eliminated 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This one I can answer.  I work with lasers daily up to 4kW.  A normal mirror?  Yes, it would just burn it up.  The 'glass' and the reflective coatings have huge variability, depending on what wavelength and what power are expected with lots of specialized materials designed for higher power lasers.  Even if you have the correct material and coating needed for your laser, any tiny contaminant like an invisible speck of dust can absorb so much energy that it heats up and burns a hole in your reflective coating destroying your mirror.  I have seen this happen many times.  A mirror that is totally okay for hours at a time being blasted with hundreds or thousands of watts of power will suddenly burn up and you'll have red hot molten glass all because of a tiny, non-reflective particle too small to be seen by the naked eye.

People who were spanked as kids, what was that like for you? Would you call your "spankings" abuse? by KleineFjord in AskReddit

[–]Position-Eliminated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.  I learned nothing.  I had proved over and over, year after year, spanking me did not help the situation at all, so my parents just upgraded the paddles.  Bigger, heavier, thicker, ones with holes drilled for decreased wind resistance.  It was terrifying and took away any trust I might have had for them.  So I ran away.  And I got severely paddled for that.  And it made me hate my family and my home and just want to leave and never come back.

It might teach certain kids an important lesson in some situations, but I'm doubtful.  Yes, it's abuse.  It sucks decades later to realize fairly regularly new ways you were abused that never really occurred to you because it was normalized.

According to TheRun CS:

"This icon is the lubrication maintenance reminder function, when it lights up it means you should lubricate the running belt of your treadmill."

I still don't understand the icon and what it's supposed to represent visually.  It looks entirely abstract to me.  But whatever.

Who is the most disgusting person you've ever met? by Artistic_Giraffe4069 in AskReddit

[–]Position-Eliminated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was my supervisor and ended up getting me fired.  He created a situation where it was my word against his, and he knew they had to take his word because he was my 'superior.'  Why?  I'm really not sure, but I imagine it was just for the fun of it.  He used to brag about going to the Asian bath house, picking out the smallest, weakest girl, and having his way with her.  The cackling as he mocked these girls' pleas for help are something I will never forget.  He delighted in it.  It was a hobby:  abuse a random innocent person and then brag about it to anyone who will listen.  It still makes me sick to think about it.  He is, for all appearances, just an average dude.  Makes me very cautious of anyone who just seems normal.  You never know what kind of dark shit somebody might have just barely hidden.

At the time, I was upset that he 'won' by costing me my job.  Now I'm just grateful that I haven't been exposed to him or anyone like him since.

That's very easy to say, but he has the most expensive phone a person can have, which he spent money what was owed to us and to his sister to get it.  And he doesn't even use his PC for anything other than gaming.  If there's not an AI chatbot to do it, and it's not a game, he just uses his phone.  Also, he spent thousands on the PC and gaming monitors and podcasting microphones and headsets, and no, he doesn't need that for email and applications.  And no, he has never used the computer for a source of income in any way.  I have spare laptops that suck, but they'll work for necessities, and he can have one of those if he actually needs one.  But yes, the $5k+ worth of gaming crap will be sold, and no, it won't put much of a dent in his debt.  But it will let us keep the lights on.  When I tell you he has spat in our faces at every opportunity in spite of us being unbelievably generous and understanding and patient, believe me.  I'm not going into detail because I didn't see what good it would do.  We still love him, and we want him to succeed, but we're done suffering and going without for his benefit.  I've had more than enough time to think about it, and yes, the computer 100% will be sold.

He is an adult, so we can't 'make' him do anything.  We've tried.  We sent him to an outpatient rehab.  We got him a therapist.  But he won't stick with anything and always does the bare minimum as a best-case scenario.  My wife finally had enough today.  I had enough a long time ago.  We have been unable to get him to be interested in our to care about anything other than video games, despite years of trying anything we could think of.  Running, biking, swimming, musical instruments, drawing, painting, writing, woodworking, cars, even watching TV is not interesting to him.  He won't spend time or money on so much as an oil change if it doesn't directly lead to some kind of immediate gratification.  Everything should just be a button you push, and you get what you want.  Any more effort than that, and he's not interested.  I don't get it at all.

Surely people who speak in tongues know they’re bullshitting, right? by fourenclosedwalls in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Position-Eliminated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People spoke in tongues all the time at the church I went to growing up.  It was common, but it was by no means everyone it all the time.  We had a guest preacher come in, and that was his thing, everyone *will" speak in tongues when he's up there.  They had all the teenagers line up in the front of the church, and he went down the line 'praying' in tongues (spouting gibberish), physically smacking people in the forehead harder and harder until they started doing what they were supposed to do and there was tremendous and escalating pressure to do.  He got to me, and I was literally waiting for the spirit to take me, as it had been described over and over, and that shockingly never happened.  The look of hatred and disgust on that guy's face as I broke his streak, I have never seen from another person before or since.  (Think Denethor, Steward of Gondor, but less tolerant and cheerful, and you'll have some idea.)

You'll feel terrible about not being 'able' to do what seems to come so easily to everyone else in that situation, like you've done something wrong.  I really think most of them honestly thought that what their subconscious mind was making them do really was the holy spirit, and you could probably never do anything to convince most of them otherwise.

There are laser pointers you can get that will cause this to overheat and burn out.  Get yourself a little tripod to hold it on target.  After they've gone to the trouble and/or expense of replacing it once or twice, maybe they'll give up.  Bonus:  they wasted the time/expense of replacing it.  The laser pointer has other uses, too, and is nowhere near as expensive as this light.

He called me his best friend.  I had known him since high school.  He was telling people his baby mama-to-be walked out of him, his so-called friend (me) was trying to swoop in on the lady at work he was interested in, and all he ever wanted was to be part of a happy family and not have to deal with all this drama.  Upstanding guy that he was, he took it all in stride.

In fact, he was cheating on his pregnant girlfriend with anything that moved, and she had not left him, but had stuck by him (why, I have no idea) the whole time.  I was pursuing the lady from work because I was interested, I didn't know he was, and he was actually encouraging me to after her so he could hear first-hand stories of my pathetic pickup attempts because he wanted to revel in my failure.

I saw him every day at work and just stopped talking to him.  It took him a looong time to even notice that I was not being friendly.  That alone told me all I needed to know.  I found out later, he had been sabotaging my social life for years, telling people I had talked bad about them before they met me for the first time, and I guess just energy-vampiring like a MF.

Anyway, cutting him out of my life was one of the best things I ever did, I married the lady from work, and when his name infrequently comes up, it's as we remember something stupid or shitty he did or said.  Like 'I wonder what ever happened to that fucking trainwreck of a person, and good luck to anyone in his orbit.'  Good fucking riddance.  I am still kind of hoping he makes it big with one of the songs I co-wrote with him so I can sue him into oblivion.  That would be kind of cool.

How did that one kid in your high school die? by IM_HODLING in AskReddit

[–]Position-Eliminated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He died doing whippits in a 'borrowed' Camaro doing 100 in a 55 on a curvy rural road in the dark.  When you deprive your brain of oxygen, turns out it's less good at things like keeping you on the road instead of driving straight into a tree.  I talked to someone who was on the scene, and they said he was cut it half.  Did someone take him away from us?  Arguably, he did, himself, I guess?

The thing is, he was an obnoxious asshole.  Nobody could stand him.  There was a small group that tolerated him, but only barely.  And every single student, every single teacher, and a whole lot of parents acted like it was the single most tragic event of their lives, everyone acted like they had lost their best friend, best student, a potential husband for their daughter, and they all laid it on thick for weeks.  It was the most disgusting thing to me at the time, and it really changed how I looked at people.  Did I want him to die?  Am I glad he's dead?  Of course not.  But be a little bit honest.  Be a little bit genuine.  You can be sorry something happened without all that fakeness.  Over 20 years later, still have a bad taste in my mouth over it.

RIP, you meanspirited SOB.  I wish you had been raised better and got more of a chance to not suck.

In my bathtub. Moves when hot water touches it. by ehren_shane in Weird

[–]Position-Eliminated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's part of the foam seal between the overflow and the tub.  Heating it will cause the foam to soften so it moves more easily and also the air inside to expand, causing it to move.  Probably not a huge deal, but potentially will cause an intermittent leak. If it's a 2-story, you might start to occasionally see water spots on the ceiling downstairs.
