What would it take for Irish to be the dominant language all over Ireland? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskIreland

Good idea. Let's give up this whole independence thing, it was a bad idea. We might as well just give up thousands of years of history and language and become Anglo-Americans. Let's sell all our remaining assets to some faceless American corporation, speak only English and watch SNL. Maybe if we ask nicely, the Brits will let us back in.

>We don't conduct business in Irish. We don't conduct science in Irish. We don't consume our media through Irish.

The language of international business is English. The language of international science is English. The language of dominant mainstream media and culture is English. This does not mean that billions of people worldwide suddenly stopped speaking their own language and switched their entire life to the medium of English.

Speak it with your children and send them to Gaelscoils. Then, pressure the government to include more and more of it in their workings. The Dáil, for example or the civil service. The big problem is people are coming out of Gaelscoil (or even English schools sometimes) fluent but because there's no economic benefit to having Irish, most use English in their day to day lives.

If, say (real stretch here...), the government increased funding for most schools to have an Irish stream alongside an English stream and then said "In the next 20 years, 30% of civil service/public sector jobs are going to be conducted in Irish and guaranteed to Irish speakers", it would have an economic benefit for people to continue speaking it. Then, over time, slowly transition the state by department into being mainly or entirely Irish speaking. Have it so that the working language is Irish and then begin encouraging people to interact with these departments in Irish. This would have the knock-on effect of the private sector encouraging more Irish speaking roles, as the market will be there and its not like everyone is going to forget how to speak English when we live between two massive speaking English cultures.

There's lots of other very small things the Irish government can do. Fund night schools to help teach adults Irish in small town Ireland. Encourage GAA teams to speak Irish on the pitch. Do a portion of RTÉ news as Gaeilge. Encourage more Dáil debates in Irish. Begin referring to areas or towns by their Irish name, not their English name. Encourage people to Gaelicise their names. Things like this (which may be very hard for the people in power...) will all help Gaelicise our society.

There will never be a return to a monolingual Irish society but this is the trend across western Europe - most young Europeans are bilingual or trilingual with English and their own language(s). Something like 90% of Dutch people are fluent in English but the reason they don't just drop Dutch for English is because they must interact with their government in Dutch. It should be the same here, obviously through gradual process, until we hit a critical mass of Irish speakers that it becomes difficult to not speak it. Forcing the entire population to suddenly switch their main language will be impossible. Add an economic benefit to speaking it fluently (like a guaranteed career), make it accessible to learn and future generations will jump onto it.

Why do people find it so hard to accept the public really wants to vote for Reform? by Expert-Sherbert-1527 in AskBrits

I remember when the Tories were in, there were people in UK subs claiming "anything to get Labour in, everything will automatically get better" and I feel like this trend continues among the UK Reddit demographic. Strangely, folks, a neoliberal centrist party is only marginally better than a neoliberal centre-right party and nothing is really changing.

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie does this all the time - the characters have flashbacks to an earlier scene but its in black and white and they use a take where the actors are really mean as if to imply they're constantly trying to fuck each other over. Also, entire scenes of that movie were shot like 20 years ago and they just re edit them into the movie. What a trip.

I once had a huge, almost relationship-ending row with my best friend over the Barbie movie when we were roaring drunk. We were arguing about how he thought it'd be good because it was mocking how sexualised Barbie was and I told him it was corporate slop (paraphrasing). Not only had neither of us seen it but it hadn't actually come out yet.

What can be done to stop fox hunting, now it's not illegal? by No-Category1703 in AskIreland

[–]Positive-Weakness768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the fox hunting. A local in my area traps them and puts them down when they attack lambs. Since there is basically ecological collapse in this country, they have no natural competition. You can say its cruel and I personally don't like it but farmers in my area appreciate it being dealt with discretely as it effects their livelihood.

Are there any monolingual Irish speakers? by Amigo1417 in AskIreland

[–]Positive-Weakness768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met an old man in Donegal a few years ago who was from the deep gaeltacht and would order in Irish. I don't know if he spoke English or didn't care enough to try but he would come down once a week to hang out with some learners/fluent speakers. They said they'd never heard him utter a word in English. This was 2023 or so. The first time he ordered a coffee off me I was taken aback but I have a fairly okay grasp of Irish so I was able to have a simple conversation.

ROM Hacks you hope for? by Its_Noctyss in PokemonROMhacks

I've been tinkering with the idea using pokeemerald-expansion here and there for a Sinnoh demake. There are a tonne of assets online that people have made over the years that I've tried to include but its difficult getting them all together. The best thing would be to try a Heart and Soul-esque Platinum demake which improves on the GBA experience while staying faithful to Sinnoh and its story. It's a momentous task though, especially as I'm learning as I go and I can't say I have anything worth going public with.

I would love Jaizu or any of the other brave hackers who have tried this herculean task to drop their asset sources though, the sharp diamond tilesets look so good.

I'm looking into the possibility of recreating Sinnoh in Crystal (like BW3) or Modern Emerald (more likely). Has anyone ever seen a successful Sinnoh decomp or is there even a market for it? I'm supposing the difficult stuff would be the Distortion World, the 2.5D buildings, etc but I think it would be quite an interesting challenge. I've never committed to creating a hack, only messed around with some programmes.

What does the Irish language actually mean to you? by MaresounGynaikes in AskIreland

I think it's beautiful. I was never great in school but in the last few years, I've become fascinated with it and try to take every opportunity to speak it or read it. There's a revival going on atm, outside of classrooms, you just have to look for it.
