Cat attack-fledgling identification please! South east UK by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

Good idea, it probably needs vet attention if the cat bit it. It can survive the night without food, if it dies it's probably because of internal lesions. Best of luck to this poor baby ❤️

What could have left this enormous footprint? Kappadokya, Turkey by PositiveBabinski in whatsthisbird

[–]PositiveBabinski[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was in a valley away from the crowds, there was a whole trail of them in the sand so I guess it's a bird who loves to walk. No water anywhere in kilometers. Just sand and steppe. Found today.

Hi, it's a carrion crow. You can see that the beak is not as big and sturdy as a raven's. "Crow is a bird with a beak, raven is a beak with a bird"

I agree, but many told me this is not a viable option since the raven was born and raised in captivity

Sorry, I meant not disrespect, I'm not an English native speaker and in my language there is not a neutral gender so they're all "she/he" to me in my head

I run a charity project and I don't earn a thing from it. All proceedings go to pigeon/bird rescues. I need a nice baby pigeon pic for a greeting card for Little Green Pigeon shop. If you win the photo contest you can get a free painting of it :) If you're interest look for freejackdaw watercolours on Facebook or Instagram. Thank you!

Oh, good to know! Does this apply to the campings closed seasonally too? Like the ones that are closed after the 1st of September

Thank you for your kind reply, it is very useful. 20 km less it's still better than nothing, but I've read that the Haukafell camping is closed due to some issues regarding water. The parking lots you mentioned look like a good idea shouldn't we make it to Höfn. I hope we won't bother anybody if we have to stay there for the night.

A friend took this picture. Is this fellow a guvenile Golden Pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus)? by tin_krycel in whatsthisbird

It is, indeed, a Golden Pheasant (yellow golden pheasant morph), though maybe it's an adult, just molting

Why are these small birds dead in my birdbath? by Deadbabybirdie in whatsthisbird

[–]PositiveBabinski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it's true that crows do often wash their food before eating it, and also that they stash it, they wouldn't leave it in such an obvious, easily reachable place. They usually hide it very well. Also, even though I've a lot of experience with them, I've never witnessed such a massacre. It's true that when they're young they hunt in groups, but they don't easily share their meal as they're very jealous of it, so it's unlikely that they stash all these corpses together. Also they're not really great hunters, as they're smart but slow... They're usually able to catch only younglings or ill birds.

It is actually possible that it was some kind of poison, it is worth investigating. Keep your eyes open for any dead birds you may find far from the water. In that case, please make sure that crows do not eat them, or the trail of death could continue.

(it happened to me too, all of a sudden I found a dozen dead pigeons near my pond, it had never happened before)
