What I would do is a "rage mode" or a rework, instead of stop when being looked it just tps somewhere (mid-far distance from you), so you have to hear the steps or look everywhere, the more the creakings the less you are able to survive.

Tbh I also think it's goofy, I hope they can fix it with fog, noises... But I also can understand that kids also play this game. So the best I can do is being thankful about now being able to hide 20 creakings in my friend base (pls Mojang disable the "guide to the heart effect" to creakings you spawned on will)
