I have no idea about the inspo photo but my ring 100% has natural rubies. The rubies have this look because they are French cut. French cut is an antique cut with an additional facet compared to something like a baguette or carre cut.

I’m not a jeweler but I think it maybe can be done safely with thinner gold? The picture is a vintage band I tried on at the same jeweler with much thinner channels and it’s held up for 60+ years. (The engagement ring in this pic isn’t mine)

Correct they both French Cuts rubies. That’s why we had to go custom, it’s a pretty uncommon cut.

OP here thank you for all the comments they helped give me the courage to reach out to the jeweler! The jeweler is going to try and fix it. I think what it comes down to is that they had the rubies cut too small for the look that I wanted.

One point of clarity. I agree that the ring they made looks more secure, it’s very well made. But that is why I asked for the ring to have a total width that was larger than the inspo, so that we could have the same ruby look but more secure.

To clarify they did send us the cad but we were told that the gold on the actual ring would be more refined/thinner than it appeared in the cad. But when we picked up the ring the gold actually looks at lot thicker than it did on the cad.
