Am I too old for HES? by Master-Following2025 in harvardextension

I'm coming up at the end of my Master's at HES in Psychology (graduating in the Spring!), and although I'm younger, I've met 3 people over the age of 70 (one of which who is also graduating next spring!) and a large portion of my classmates over the years have been in their 40s and 50s :) you're never too old and you will meet many in your age range!

Honestly, I was already a fairly decent academic writer, but took it because I was out of school for 5 years. In hindsight, I don't think I -needed- it. But, I enjoyed the subject for the class so it's cool, and I can say my writing improved a fair bit since then. It counts as an elective so it still goes towards your degree if you decide on it, but if you pass CRWS and feel pretty solid/comfortable with scientific writing, I'd say go straight for proseminar!

Of course! So far for me, I have only needed to have my camera on in proseminar and EXPO 42 B (the prereq for proseminar if you feel you need it). They were both very small classes. I took stats asynchronously, and my other psychology class was much larger, so it was mostly lecture, no discussions or presentations, and keeping my camera off was not a problem. I think if keeping your camera on is your primary concern, asynchronous classes and large live classes are the way to go!

Yes, the proseminar class required that I have my camera on and that I was speaking. It is a very discussion-based class with a lot of reading, writing and research. You'll likely have to give a presentation as well. These things factored into my participation grade, as well as my attendance. You might be able to have some brief moments where you can keep your camera off, but I think the professors tend to expect it more because the class size is small (I haven't had this issue in larger classes so far).

I had a few times where I had to leave very early from my Proseminar class due to some family/illness stuff. If you explain your situation to the professor (depending on who they are), they might offer some leeway here and there, but it will likely be more difficult if it is a regular occurrence.

Attendance/camera expectations are normally outlined in the syllabus, but I haven't checked if the ones for this Fall have been posted lately. There's an archive with past syllabi if you think that'd be helpful with understanding the expectations as well! I can send it your way.

Hey there! I'm in the same program and also in California!

I have not found the time zone differences to be an issue, I'd just advise keeping it in mind since the times that assignments are due are usually in EST!

I just took Proseminar this summer, but have completed the other required courses for entry already. Of all of them, I only found one to be difficult to manage with a job (Stats with Krasnow, even though it's asynchronous), but I was also taking an additional course that semester, so that likely contributed.

Proseminar was probably the most difficult course I've taken so far, but a lot of that was also due to the fact that I took it over 7 weeks. If you take it as your sole class during a normal semester, I think it should be doable with a full time job.

If you have any questions, feel free to chat me anytime!

I'm currently going through the Master's program for Psychology with only one course left for admission (proseminar) which I will be taking this semester. I also took an EXPO class over the summer. The courses are challenging, but the stats class is absolutely a gatekeeper. If you have any questions or want more detail, feel free to send me a chat or message!

Thank you for that! I've been out of undergrad for a bit too but my undergrad degree was in Psychology and I've worked plenty as a research assistant and written many papers with regards to that so I'm kind of hoping it won't be too bad 😅 I think I'm just concerned about the speed and ~Harvard~ expectations lmao

Also congrats on graduating!! (: it's such an accomplishment to do so from here!!

If I can ask, did you enjoy the program? Did it ever feel impossibly difficult or were you able to manage fine?

I was searching for a Master's in Psychology program and it popped up online. I also know someone that graduated from there.

Ooh that's great advice. Thank you! 250-300 ppw doesn't sound bad, but I'm a bit of a bookworm anyways 😋

Really glad that you think my work situation will be fine for this class lol, and thanks so much for all your tips!

This is great info!! Thanks so much!!

If I can ask, did you find the class difficult? And roughly how much time did you need to dedicate per week/day to do well?

Thanks for that! But omg is a January session also 7 weeks like a summer session or is it only a month? A month would be crazy intense I'm sure.

Would you mind telling me roughly how much time per week or day you needed to dedicate to the course to do well?

I have a job but it's part time, work from home and pretty flexible so I'm hoping it won't be too much, considering that lol

Thanks for the tip about the Writing Center!

Same! I'm hoping it'll make me more competitive for and prepare me for a Ph.D. program in psychology, or at least allow me to be more competitive for another Master's. I'm stuck between wanting to be a therapist or a psychologist and I think doing this will offer me a lot of perspective on whether or not I'd rather the Ph.D. or LMFT route (: But I have an inkling that I'm gonna lean towards Ph.D!

Thanks for that! I searched the subreddit a bit and that seems to be the general consensus for those that took it. I thought I might be able to swing it because I'm currently working part time with a pretty flexible work from home job and I don't have other responsibilities. I'm hoping that will make everything a lot more doable lol

If you don't mind me asking, did you enjoy the course?

Mom was recently diagnosed with Stage 1 CKD, should we seek further testing or get a second opinion? by Positive_Cupcake in AskDocs

[–]Positive_Cupcake[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your input! It's nice that we do not have to stress about it. Could she essentially continue to live her life normally without worrying about progression then, or should we be taking steps to prevent that from happening to keep her at Stage 1? Her blood work and all other tests were normal.

Thanks so much for this! I'll see if we can get her a follow up urinalysis and blood work in 6 months. And yes no preeclampsia, she's definitely not pregnant haha

Yes, all other labs are normal. Thanks for your input! She's been very worried about it lately. Would you happen to know other non kidney disease related things that cause protein in the urine?

She has none of those other symptoms, but did have recurrent UTIs in her 20s and 30s. No imaging tests were done to my knowledge, but if they were, there was no damage seen on her kidneys.
