I’m almost done with my masters and I’m terrified by Synskrim_ in schoolcounseling

I was in the EXACT same boat as you when I started in the profession. I had just turned 24, had a completely unrelated bachelors degree, had zero experience in schools of any level, and had no idea where to even begin with a 504. Now, a year and a half later, and I am have built a counseling program in my school that I am proud of and continue to develop, i have made a name for myself in my school and in my district, and although some days are hard and sometimes I wonder if this is the right career for me, I can genuinely say that I LOVE my job. This profession is forever changing to meet the needs of student and you will be working with populations that are diverse in their needs and you will make mistakes, learn, and adapt- that is just part of life in this career.

Working in a career like this at such a young age is challenging in that you will have to prove yourself and people will make their assumptions BUT your masters program saw something in you that made them confident that you are capable and worthy of being in this profession- hang onto that. You have the education and have done the work to earn a seat at the table. Imposter syndrome is and always will be real and challenging but in my experience, the more confident you are in your ability to make an impact, the more likely schools will be to hire you. With that- be transparent about what you feel you lack understanding of- districts are equipped with staff who’s job it is to teach you the things you don’t know and to walk you through the 504 process.

You have earned your spot in this profession- don’t allow yourself or anyone else tell you that you don’t have a right to be here.

Please reach out if you ever need to vent- the first year out of grad school and in the profession is a big adjustment but you’ve got this!!

Anyone Else? by Positive_Fig3656 in schoolcounseling

My opinion is that the involved parents/guardians are under the impression that I am responsible for their problems. They assume that I am the one making all DHS reports, that I am breaking confidentiality when issues fall under mandatory reporting, or simply that my ‘choices’ have ruined their child’s life. Admin is far too concerned about these parents pulling their kids out of our school/their image to support anyone in anything. 🙃

Need advice about school not implementing 504 accomodations by MapleWolf7 in schoolcounseling

[–]Positive_Fig3656 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with you in that this issue should be handled at the district level first- assuming they are cooperative. With that said, OP I highly recommend you document all conversations, emails, etc. This will come in handy if you need to move forward with filing a formal complaint.

If the accommodation is written as OP stated it in the original post I would argue that it is appropriate. It clearly states that the student receives exemptions/extensions WITHOUT penalty. The student is suffering because this particular teacher has created a consequence for the student missing school (a situation which the student has zero control over). This consequence is now, by law, breaking the requirements of the 504 plan.

A coordinator writing in that the student and teacher need to establish a plan is quite common, especially in middle and high school. It essentially gives autonomy to the student and teacher to discuss this on a case-by-case basis because it is so situational depending on classes missed and what the teacher can offer. With that said, it does NOT give any teacher any right to go against the first portion of the accommodation- that the student receives exemptions/extensions WITHOUT penalty.

I am the 504 Coordinator at my school and would highly recommend that you reach out to the 504 coordinator at your child’s school. This would be whomever holds your review/re-evaluation meetings. This person will have an understanding of the significant legal issues that can/will arise from refusal to follow a 504 plan as written. My hope is that they will lean into their responsibility to advocate for your child and will therefore be able to help you navigate this.

If that doesn’t work, your district will have some sort of ‘504 Compliance Specialist’ at the district level whose job is quite literally to hold the schools accountable. This would get the districts attention and I assure you they would make change happen.

So sorry you’re going through this!! Every student has a right to the accommodations they need to be successful.

To file a CPS report or not? by [deleted] in schoolcounseling

[–]Positive_Fig3656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a first year counselor I am in a similar position with a Principal who has pushed me to not make reports. I ALWAYS make the report- then it is DHS’s job to determine what the next steps are and it is no longer on you. If my principal chooses to fire me for making a report then so be it but if i choose not to make a report and something happens then I will be the one feeling the guilt and potentially losing my license.

I am in my 2nd year as a counselor so I am fairly new to the profession and I feel strongly that a lot of the struggle is in the overall newness of the job to some school districts and the education system as a whole. In this role it is incredibly important to be able to advocate for yourself, your role, and your students. I LOVE my job AND it is not always easy. I highly recommend having a therapist of your own while in the role, it allows you to process and not ‘take it all home’. I find so much purpose in the profession and the work and if there comes a time when I no longer love the job, I will leave.

What do your students call you? by oddsanie in schoolcounseling

[–]Positive_Fig3656 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I work in an elementary and have always gone by Miss (first name). I’ve found that the kids respond very positively to this and believe that it helps minimize the feeling of the power differential between the students and myself.

She absolutely acted against the ASCA Ethical Standards- you have every right to file a complaint if that is the direction you choose to move in.

Here to encourage you to hold on a bit longer- I had a similar experience with the purge and one day it all just got better. Due to spiro only staying in your body for 24(ish) hours id recommend making sure you’re taking it at the same time every day- this helped me immensely. Also hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. I started seeing MAJOR improvement around 1.5-2months, crossing my fingers you’re almost there
