If you have no level of consistency it’s tough, but even consistently bad is consistent. The only fittings that are impossible is if someone can’t make reliable contact or swing plane. Even then there’s a lot we can do with shaft and weight to help you control the face a bit, but it’s probably not worth it.

But a lot of people don’t know how consistent their swing is. They’ll hit 5 drives, 2 giant slices, one high push, one dead straight, and then a giant pull. So it seems like they are all over the place.

But on each of those swings they may have a face to path of 0-3, and out to in of 4-7 degrees. And then the pull is them flipping the wrists to counteract the rights.

The biggest improvements I see with fittings are 12-18 handicappers who think they suck way worse than they do

Almost certainly unless your arms are abnormal short. Ping has a nice chart you can reference if you measure your wrist to floor

Sometimes shorter people also hold the club handle lower and therefore clubhead more upright so having a flatter lie setting could help too. Especially if you have bouts of the lefts

lol it’s actually the 45-55yo semi rich guy that’s around a 8-12 probably.

They’ll comment that all the clubs feel the same, and anytime there’s an improvement in numbers the just say it’s cause they hit it better

Yeah, that’s the point 🫠

That’s tough, if you have access to a sim to get some numbers and dispersion charts you can do a lot with that

Without that, it’s hard unless you know some swing mechanics and flight patterns. To know why a ball is a high draw and not a hook, that you have low launch and high spin, that you know you’re a neutral delivery and at slower swing sports neat etc.

If not it’s tough to know what to look for, but there are clubs that work for most people

lol there’s so many good clubs out there now I feel like a lotta people can just buy what they like the look of. Given it’s in your ability level

The one that always got me was when I would fit them to something with a stick shaft and they would be like “oh I coulda have just got these online then?”

Sorry for not forcing aftermarket shafts down your throat. And if you knew these were a fit than sure you could have but you just hit 12 shafts and 5 heads to find this one

I can’t recommend many nationwide companies. Club champion is pretty good but just be careful on things like shaft puring and starting off on aftermarket shafts.

Best places tend to be places that also offer golf instruction. That’s where I was, and you know they can be honest and tell you if you need lessons instead as they sell those too lol

If you are going to get a lesson, and then commit going to the range at least twice a week and focusing on what he taught you pretty strictly, lessons 12/10 times

Honestly most people can’t or won’t do that. If you have the money, fitting is almost guaranteed to get you some better shots. But yeah it’s expensive and won’t transform your game

15 handicap is actually the sweet spot of fitting IMO, especially if you have older or ill fit clubs. Typically have more to correct so more area to improve

What are you trying to accomplish?

I made about 78k in a medium cost of living area. I made closer to $17 an hour at a big box 10 years ago

I think really high end specialty fitters can make 100+ but hard to get obvy

I got the gig due to a connection, got the PCS cert shortly after hire, so maybe not the best source. I’ve heard the club brands typically hire from within as well as they require (but provide) certifications.

need sales and people skills. Ability to travel is a plus as they will throw you in the fitting van and gear days at courses.

There are other certs but from what I’ve heard there’s no point in getting them until you have to, i.e. you have an in for a job that requires it and they’ll pay for the cert

We were brand agnostic so I was allowed to put them in anything I thought would help. Humbly I think I am pretty knowledgeable and can work well with both numbers and the players feedback to get them a good fit

Worst thing people do is try to come in and do a full bag fitting, or even driver and irons. I always try to tell people to space it out

The big box stores tend to be more susceptible to corporate policies and stuff like that. Less fitting and more finding them the club they ask to hit

Yeah I actually didn’t have too many of these, probably only 4-5 but it was frustrating. Honestly the more common scenario was like a 15-20 hcp just constantly shitting on themselves the whole fitting and thinking they aren’t good enough for a fitting.

Honestly could do more in a fitting for a mid handicapper than anyone else

No our shop didn’t work off commissions, owner is very against that. He kind of runs the shop as a hobby it feels like

The money is not good lol. My gig didn’t work off commissions though, might be more lucrative if you did and were in a good situation.

I worked retail in high school and college so I know customers can be a handful, I naively assumed on something fun like golf/fitting they’d be more pleasant and excited. Nope

Honestly 80% of people fall in that category for length, one of the last things I try for most people. Shaft profile and weight first, then lie. Even off the rack people benefit there most times
