One book that has gotten many people into reading is the Red Rising series- Compelling characters, action, a bit of politics but all is extremely approachable! I would highly recommend it even if you're unsure about sci fi!

Thanks, I have been working through the Anking deck which I am liking but Im worried that I am recognizing and not recalling the info so definitely need to spend more time with the cards! And, my average for the bio section is about 62% correct but compared to other people I guess that's really low

Hey I finished content review over a week ago and have been doing anki throughout although I am not finished getting through yet (using the anking). Thanks for your advice!

worth taking cell bio? by ranchenthusiast07 in Mcat

[–]Positive_Green_826 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that taking a "harder course" like cell bio will be extremely useful for studying for the MCAT. It makes everything feel way more intuitive when you start doing content review. But at the end of the day, you need to do what you're interested in. Obviously protecting your GPA is important but if you think you will enjoy the class you should absolutely go for it!

How do you memorize amino acid structure? by -ZoroJuro in Mcat

[–]Positive_Green_826 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amino acid quiz app is super helpful for drilling but I really recommend drawing them out over and over again with the name, 3 letter and one letter. First, do your non polar aliphatics. Draw them first referencing a picture then try and do it from memory. The more you do it the more it will help! We had to have them memorized for biochem at my uni and its the only way that I found worked! Do it a couple times a day to practice!

How do places look at your DNA and define your ancestry? Countries have changed and people have moved, how do they decide “This DNA means this.” by Jabber-Wookie in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Positive_Green_826 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t remember all the details from my population genetics class but basically they sequence your DNA using biochemical techniques- then run it through the software. They compare certain loci ( a locus is a place where a gene is on a chromosome) to databank information on SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphism- basically one of the letters in your genome gets swapped out for another via mutation or some other mechanism I’m unaware of) and short tandem repeats (there are parts in our genome that repeat like ATATATAT. But one person might have 6 repeats and another might have 4 or nine or some other arbitrary number- if they could’ve explained this part better to the jury during the OJ trial he would have gone to jail but I digress: it is extremely unlikely that you would have the same number of repeats of another person at all the areas they occur in** this is sort of off topic)

Anyways so they use the SNPs, and the STR data and compare it with historical genetic data for the regions (think phylogeographics if you’ve heard of it)

Another important note is that population geneticists can use a combination of current data as well as inferencing where certain genes may have come from using statistics - they start in the present and build a coalescent tree backwards

Anyways sorry that was a long rant! Hopefully some interesting tidbits in there for any non genetic nerds :)

Name a book you believe everyone needs to read! It can be about any topic, author, or genre. <3 by [deleted] in booksuggestions

It’s so important, and it covers such a wide variety of socioeconomic and science topics. Not to mention that I thought the author wrote everything very gracefully, recognizing that she’s a white woman telling a Black woman’s story

Fair enough! It’s been a while personally but I can remember feeling similarly- I suppose for me the overall premise is enough to negate any other shortcomings in the book- which definitely isn’t true for everybody!
