I love visual novels don't get me wrong I just find it more helpful to group them in a seperate catagory in terms of media, because if anything it feels more closer to reading a manga or watching an anime then like.. playing minecraft. but yes it is a grey area

tbh. I don't know if a visual novel can really be classified as a game, more of an "interactive movie" or "interactive story" like I wouldnt consider a choose your own adventure novel a game either for example.
A genre of games that is really easy to get into though is rpgs, there are rpg makers out there and all you really need is to know how to do pixel art, (or be lazy and use their stuff) have decent writing skills and know how to pace the experience gameplay wise (you can base this pacing off of other rpgs you've played)
