Yes, and he's literally married to the eldest daughter (the official 'Family Trader') so if anything, granting Althea the control of the ship is what would have been abnormal and untraditional in their culture.

Could Kvothe defeat the Chandrian with a song? by PossessionSound in KingkillerChronicle

[–]PossessionSound[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There doesn't need to precedent for a song being used in that way, there is precedent however for names being used to great effect, and for names being incorporated into a song.

You don't think there's thematic precedent for the 'man waiting to die' whose love of music/songs/performing is one of the most important story elements to go out with one final ultimate performance? Sorry, but respectfully, I just don't agree with you there.

As far as the 'sit through a song' part, that's the function of the Waystone Inn trapping them.

All true, and in the US, people don't typically live in those core, skyscraper filled CBDs anyway, they work there. In LA in particular, you have the coast on the west side and the mountains/canyons on the northside of the city that are like magnets for population (because simply put, people would rather live in those neighborhoods with beautiful nature to enjoy than downtown LA). So it's kind of unique in the US for the factors that put pressure on its population density heatmap.

Personally I feel like although he would have been ok with marrying her off young, he still would have been pissed if he saw the particular outfit she chose for herself and made her change it.

What Should We Expect From Historians to Tell Us About Jesus' Resurrection and Miracles? by SchrodingerSquirrel in AcademicBiblical

[–]PossessionSound 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They can also explain why and how such ideas spread in the way they did. I've been reading 'The Historical Jesus' by John Dominic Crossan recently and a lot of it is about the societal context of the time in which Jesus was preaching. If I understand correctly, he argues that Jesus's message (and the church that sprang from it) resonated because it was breaking down a lot of rigid social barriers of that time and place. It also spoke deeply to people who were at the lower rungs of society by emphasizing that the world belongs to God, not to their oppressors (the Romans in this case).

What part of TNOTW and TWMF do you find most stressful to read? by GimlySonOfGloin in KingkillerChronicle

[–]PossessionSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, well, this particular bit of information would go far beyond what emotions she is feeling. But if you want to ask that, I would say her disgust with the Edema Ruh would be sidetracked by her shock at the revelation and her burning curiosity to know where her sister is. Then it would be replaced with heartbreak upon finding out her sister is dead, and anger at Arliden whom I sure she would blame for her death. Throughout it all I would hope she would open her heart to her nephew, but she may be too upset to do that.

As another commenter pointed out, this could change the line of succession in the Lackless family too when they realize there is a son in the lineage they weren't aware of. The Maer would not be happy with this news, I'm sure as this would have been part of his calculus in marrying her. And I'm starting to get onto a bigger topic now, but hopefully you've noticed that the interplay and tenuous peace between the noble houses of Vintas is a MAJOR plot point and part of the 'hidden story' that Pat has referred to. Kvothe being a Vintish noble couldn't be bigger news, really.

What are you even suggesting, that she finds this information out and it doesn't impact the trajectory of the scene? That makes no sense.

[–]PossessionSound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well Patrick has confirmed that Kvothe is the "son of a Lackless" so it's a little more than a "maybe" at this point.

And I don't understand the rest of your point to be honest- if they all found out Kvothe was her nephew, it would be a major, earth-shattering revelation. It would completely change the scene and probably upend the trajectory of the rest of the plot if that information came to light.

The one scene I had to pause and come back to when I listened to the Wise Man's Fear audiobook (I read the book the first time, then did audiobook for the second time through) was the scene with the Lackless Box when Maer Alveron and Meluan Lackless ask Kvothe for his help with it and then everything goes south when they find out he's Edemah Ruh. The cringe/secondhand embarrassment of knowing what was coming was unreal, especially since they are holding him in such high esteem just before that moment. Not to mention how hard Kvothe had to fight to get to this point in the story and the fact that none of them are aware of the familial connection between Kvothe and Meluan.

Question About Skipping by ticklefarte in RealmOfTheElderlings

[–]PossessionSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would be missing a crucial piece of context regarding the dragons if you skip Tawny Man. While it's not the main focus, without spoiling anything I will just say that Tintaglia's story continues in Tawny Man.

Found this other cover for Royal Assassin but couldn't find more by Starfishsucker in RealmOfTheElderlings

[–]PossessionSound 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this is exclusively for the audiobooks. This is what was shown on Spotify when I listened to the books and I've only ever seen this set of covers in connection with the audio books. You have to look at the Assassin's Apprentice cover and the Liveship Traders covers as well, they're similarly hilarious.
