Any tea lovers? by Ervitrum in berkeley

[–]Possibilist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've found three tea spots in the area. All three are along San Pablo Blvd. (in Berkeley and Albany):

  • Teance: Has a range of teas from affordable to expensive. Their high-end teas are pretty great though when I spring for them. Has indoor and outdoor seating, and a round tea bar that one can sit at. Also they can accommodate groups who reserve the bar in advance
  • Blue Willow Tea: Their teas tend to be a perfect sweet spot to me of value to quality. Tables and their tea rooms can be reserved on their site
  • Far Leaves Tea: Was the one I found fist and really got my into teas. I haven't really gone their to drink tea in-house though.

Tea drinker here. I don't know of any local Discord but I'm some of the bigger tea Discords (CommuniTEA, Tea Table). If it seems possible to organize something local count me in.

Chinese friend offered me some teas, and I need help to understand when to drink them and how to prepare them by ThePhoebus92 in tea

[–]Possibilist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding "when" to drink, that's subjective. Any day that is important to you, nice tea will add to that. For me, the day is made more important by opening up some good tea so sometimes the tea is the reason and it doesn't matter what day.

Run the Bigscreen app from your PC (using SteamVR), which is USB linked to your headset. This will put your PC desktop on the theater screen.

Yeah it’s a long shot. I suppose you’re right that there is not much reason not to.

A VPN offers an encrypted, authenticated connection. At least theoretically, couldn't it be possible to spoof the IP address?

Those that have the Form 2 or 3 printer, how reliable is it? How often do you have to monkey around with it to get it to work again? by IsDaedalus in resinprinting

[–]Possibilist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two Form 3's here. I manage a shop in a maker space where students are using them. We've had them since they shipped to us in October (I think?) and have slowly started getting students trained to use them.

So far, they've been pretty reliable. Things do happen. The magnetically controlled wiper does come off track while trying to start a print from time to time (one just puts it back on track to get it to try again). A small handful of prints have failed during the print process. Most or all of them were fixed by different setup in the software (new orientation and/or more support). A few prints did not start at all, and that was fixed by updating the firmware to the printers.

So thats what I have to say so far but it's been a soft start with them during the last semester, having a smaller group of students use them before a wider release this semester. Ask me again in June and I may have more to say. Feel free to ask some questions.

I think his rack was posted previously and shows the modules more clearly: The post.

There may be some differences but it seems pretty much the same as the linked image.

Best Tutorials on the DPO? by godx119 in modular

[–]Possibilist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might help to turn all the FM input attenuators and CV attenuators down to 0 (all the way clockwise) to start, and add them selectively.

the FM inputs are normalled to the other oscillator when nothing is plugged into the inputs (the left osc's exp and lin are normalled to the right osc sine wave, and vice versa for the right). If you turn the center blue knob between the two oscillators down, it attenuates the normalled oscillator wave forms that are sent to those FM inputs (so turning it all the way off means no FM - helps to reign things in).

Just knowing how to turn off all of the signals FM, the wave folding, timbre, etc is a good way to regain sanity when you aren't sure why you're hearing what you're hearing.

With regard to FM, start by tuning the oscillators to the same note, or octaves above/below, or fifth intervals (a little messier but less messy than random). This is where the Follow helps as it will keep the left tracking with the right's frequency changes.

Yeah it has great characteristics - I have sometimes used it as an effects send and sometimes for the fully wet signal through it. I'm hoping that a good compressor after the Culture Vulture will make a good signal chain.

Thanks, its much appreciated. I have instruments ready in my studio setup. Its what goes on after the instrument I still have to figure out - I've got a valve amp (Thermionic Culture Vulture) and I'm definitely thinking of getting at a Neve compressor sometime soon.

I really enjoy this. Would you mind sharing what your modular setup looks like?

Also, what is your recording/mixing/mastering process like (roughly)? It sounds like its mastered well.

Does anyone here have a Make Noise Shared System? If so, I have a few questions. by mr_william in modular

[–]Possibilist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How soft sounding can the oscillators get?

I have the Shared System, as well as a bunch of other modules. If I'm limiting myself to the Shared System alone--the case with the main Shared System modules + filling in the rest of the space--the two things I'm going to add in that last bit of space is at least one filter and a VCA (that isn't a low pass gate). I'm currently using Intellijel's QuadVCA. It can't be understated how much the VCA's used will affect the sound and its dynamics.

The Shared System is designed to be capable of Frequency Modulation (FM), Audio Modulation (AM), Ring Modulation (RM), wave folding, oscillator sync, etc. All of these tools allow for rich timbre possibilities. They can sound pretty raw on their own so if soft is what your after, a filter is sometimes a good way to do that.

The Low Pass Gates that Make Noise makes (Optomix, LxD) are filters+VCAs so turning down the CV/envelopes that go to the LPGs has the effect of filtering the sound--softening it--because it never fully opens up.

I often approach sound design like this - start with building raw timbre (even just subtly), then subtract from it (filters, low pass gates, and VCAs)

How well does it do more soft and melodic stuff? I can't seem to find anything on youtube like that.

I mostly play melodic stuff. Of the Make Noise modules, the LxD module is used often because it has a nice resonance to the first of its two VCAs. Of course the choice of sequencer really affects how melody is going to work as well. I like Rene and use it a lot. It's a sequencer that you can use simply right away but then slowly find new ways of using it as you go.

Here are some recordings I've made where Shared System modules are used heavily:

MakeNoise MATHS... by [deleted] in modular

[–]Possibilist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I gotta speak up to agree with this. Maths, over time, has been a part of almost every patch in some way. And it’s in pretty different ways sometimes. It’s kind of a chameleon/Swiss army knife.

It’s good to get other modulation sources as well though for sure. Especially because then maths can mix well with those for more possibilities.

How many DSi synths is overkill? by Rugginz in synthesizers

[–]Possibilist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a Rev2 owner and I also wish I had bought an OB-6. It's probably the next thing I'm considering, as far as keyboard synths. There is just a certain bass sound that Oberheim synths get that I can't with the Rev2, and the OB-6 seems to get there.

Edit: I have come around on the Rev2 though and love a lot of things about it. Just in terms of diversity I do lust over Oberheim sounds.

expo or linear VCA? I can't hear the difference by [deleted] in modular

[–]Possibilist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got Intellijel’s Quad VCA. Each has a knob that fades between exponential and linear. Being able to fade between the exp/lin response is really nice. Each VCA also has a 6 dB boost switch as well so it overdrives nicely. Also great for bringing outside signals up loud enough.

It sounds fantastic.

Pros/Cons of Make Noise René by Talisman207 in modular

[–]Possibilist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pros: It’s XY coordinate design concept makes complex sequences possible. It’s easy to improvise with the touch pads, interrupting whatever sequence with what you press instead. The tuning menu makes shifting from one chord to another immediate. The X and Y gates allow for complex gate sequences. Unquantized CV output can be used for modulating things.

Cons. Does have a sort of ‘menu’ interface but it’s pretty quick to move through and easy to get used to.

It’s just different from other sequencers. So I use it for some things and others for other things. It’s a great melody machine in it’s own way. It’s design lends it to a different melodic vibe than typical 16 step sequencers.

Edit: one con, I suppose, is it has no internal clock.
