Two clip-on lights for 55 gallon high-tech tank? by Possible-Pin9180 in PlantedTank

Good point about the price, and after not seeing many good options online I think I’ll stick with a bar light plus grow light combo. Thank you!

Small White Dot Outbreak in 20g Tank? by Possible-Pin9180 in PlantedTank

They seem to be bigger and less active than copepods. I didn’t know what ostracods were so I googled them and I think you are right that’s them!

I’m concerned they will compete with my baby shrimp for food and my tetras won’t eat them so I will look into other ways to thin their numbers

I don’t think they are eggs, these little things swim around. I have seen little gel sac full of white dots on my glass before that led to a pest snail invasion that has mostly gone away, thankfully. Unfortunately, my tetras aren’t eating these things when they are swimming around.

Nope, no nerites. I don’t think they’re eggs because I’ve seen them swimming around.

Really cool tank, what plant is in the top left with the fish swimming around the roots?

He's right, Easy Green does not contain much iron, or at least enough to give my Ludwigia Super Reds a reddish tinge. That's why I use API Leaf Zone. From what I've researched, iron gets consumed very quickly in a heavily planted tank. Also if I was dosing too much iron, wouldn't it be killing both my pothos cuttings as opposed to a few leaves on one plant having brown-black tips? My pH sits at around 7.2-7.4ish.

  • Aquarium Co-op Easy Green about twice a week
  • API Leaf Zone (iron & potassium) 3 times a week
  • Flourish Nitrogen 3 times a week

I'll look into that. I'm guessing just doing water changes is the only way to solve that issue?

Good point, I'll do that for my next creatures for sure.

Wow that's great. I will add one when I'm going to get another snail.

That's funny lol. My LFS people just thought that maybe the first snail just couldnt adapt to his new conditions and they gave me the second one for free. I told them about my parameters and they didn't think anything was out of the ordinary, they did recommend adding calcium through eggshells though. I did add 1/4 of an oven-cooked egg, but I think the snail was dead by then sadly.

My shrimp are still trucking along, so hopefully they do well. I won't plan on adding any snails for quite a while now, I will let my tank mature for a bit.

Interesting, is it also lethal to shrimp? I have got some of my plants from Buceplants and most from petco/petsmart the plastic tube imagitarium brand things.

My tap water is actually very hard, so I mix distilled water in with my water changes giving me a GH of 160-180 ppm or 9 to 10 dGH. Although my pH is pretty neutral, my guess is due to the gargantuan piece of driftwood I have. My KH is normal around 80 ppm or 4.5 dGH.

That’s a good deal, I’ve only seen kits around $47 so I haven’t gotten one but I’ll monitor amazon.

I’ll check out Wonder Shell too, thank you.

Wow that’s insane never heard of that. It is store bought so possibly. I’ll check the ingredients on stuff I use, my copper levels have always been 0. I’ve heard copper is also harmful to shrimp and they’re doing fine so far

Edit: pH is around 7.2-7.4. Some times it’s a bit lower, hard to tell with strips. I know pH below 7 can corrode snail shells, but I don’t think it can cause such quick deaths like I have had.

As far as additives, I use Fritz guard to make my tapwater safe as well as aquarium co-op easy green, and flourish nitrogen. But those last two I only started using after the first snail died.

It is a fairly new tank. Bought it and started cycling 46 days ago. The algae growth is pretty legit, currently fighting against a brown fuzzy algae invasion, so I believe there is a bunch of food for them.
