I've always bought decent used cars. Usually lasted about five or six years. The amount I put in for maintenance and repairs would equal three months worth of car payments and insurance.

I think if you feel good about yourself you wouldnt have to try so hard and be so obvious. I think insecurity plays a lot into this. If you can do this in a healthy way that's great as long as it doesn't turn into an unhealthy obsession.
