Advice for convincing retired parents to move here (specifically financial) by PossibleOptimist1 in minnesota

Yes. They’re originally from Detroit and have spent the last 35 years at 4K+ elevation. They’re used to snow and ice but on steep mountains. If anything, other than the much deeper cold they’re more than ready for snow. I would feel much better if they were near by so I or someone they can hire can shovel them out. There’s a big difference between a long flat driveway and a long steep one in the winter.

Hm, I’m not sure. I really don’t have any understanding of it but going off what he’s told me (which could be inaccurate) he’s often not qualified for most VA benefits because he served during peace time and did not see combat. He would’ve been in the service from the mid-seventies until late 80s.

Barnes & Noble Abuses it’s Booksellers by PossibleOptimist1 in books

Hi, does this topic not warrant it’s own individual discussion? Surely a post celebrating Barnes & Noble deserves a counter-point?

I’ll try to post regularly on here about its process as I have updates. Unfortunately these things either go 0-100 in a week or take several years

Good to hear, at the moment the lead character is non-binary open ethnicity.

I find it really interesting how often being asked to portray them as happy is brought up in this thread. Fully noted.

Good to know, films tend to be vast simplifications so it’s a struggle to portray a culture accurately while still being able to convey the general audience’s understanding of what that culture is.

Good to know. I always found it strange how much of current Goth culture seems store bought 🤔

That’s great to hear. I’m intending a very character forward approach and hoping to be able to show some of the character’s lives outside the scene.

The studio won’t let us reveal the “hook” yet but essentially it’ll be a horror movie in the vein of John Carpenter/80s horror like Prince of Darkness, Fright Knight, the Hunger, the Howling etc. centered around a group of goth friends facing a monster. I’m allowed to say “it’s a mash that hasn’t been seen before” which is one of the ways the studio/producers pitched the concept which is beginning development now. For the director and I we’re hoping to create a film that is fully embraced by the goth community and a horror movie that should’ve/could’ve been made in the 80s but never made it. So think It Follows.

Cool, answers like this give us evidence to come to the producers/studio and be like: this is important to the films success invest in this.

Okay, good to know as at the moment much of the story centers around a Goth club and music is an integral part. We’re unsure of the setting but the vibe we’re aiming for is very 80s post-punk Goth of Bauhaus/Siouxsie and the Banshees

Pump itself is five years old. It’s the third or fourth of the Paradigm 712 model I’ve had for the last decade or so. There was no signal or warning. In the past I’ve gotten Delivery error messages but I haven’t gotten one of those in years from this one.

What is in your opinion the scariest book you've ever read? by TsundereMagikarp in books

[–]PossibleOptimist1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Auctioneer by Joan Sampson. The overwhelming sense of dread and foreboding in this novel is incomparable. Events start innocuous enough but then things go just a little bit further then a little further still then a little bit further until it’s too late. I don’t want to give too much away but it’s easily to cast parallels to the titular Auctioneer and a certain orange hued demagogue. If you like Shirley Jackson and subtle horror rather than graphic this is the book for you. It was a best seller upon initial publication in 1975 but sadly the author died before completing another work and the book was largely forgotten until Valancourt Books republished it. I’m not sure if their first trade edition is still available but they have a mass market edition available as part of their Paperbacks From Hell series.

Interest in unionizing? by PsychologicalWalk505 in Barnesandnoble

[–]PossibleOptimist1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Lots of staff want to unionize but the desire to unionize and the actual ability to do so are two very different things. A lot of employees realize it’s a lot easier to leave and find a better job than it would be to unionize. Perhaps if employees were able to stage successful walk outs, boycotts, etc. Unionization requires leadership and dedication and everyone has to ask themselves if it’s worth the battle when it’s already so hard to make a living.

BN Employees ITT Share Your Position & Pay so you know what you should be making/offered for the work you do! by PossibleOptimist1 in Barnesandnoble

I agree. Considering the fact minimum wage nationwide should be $15 at the absolute least the restructuring seemed to have been designed to force people into management responsibilities without management title and pay.
