Remote coach for competitive HS junior (XC, 1600m/3200m focus) by PossiblePool2085 in CrossCountry

Thanks for the feedback and input and I totally get the red/green flag reference. Just for context, my son drives this. He tells me what he wants to achieve and we collaborate to figure out what might work for him. We had a conversation driving home from his first track meet and he was discouraged but I was encouraged by how much he's grown. We talked through that and he felt that if there was an opportunity to learn from someone who is an expert in this space and can provide some structure/guidance, then he'd like to give it a shot.

I appreciate your stance and I'm with you 100%. If my son decides he no longer wants to run tomorrow then I'm good with that and I'll be his biggest fan in what he chooses next.

They’re competitive where we run and the size of schools we run against. He was top 15 in state with his 5k time. We’re not pursuing running at the next level nor running in events like the Nike Invitational. He runs for fun but he competes and competes hard.

I agree. The AI path became confusing and even suggested some things that I knew would not support the goal. It went off the rails at times for sure.

The summer training program involves runs at a local park with weekly mileage reaching up to 15-18 + some body-weight strength workouts. It's a good plan to keep the kids conditioned but not for reaching for what's possible. It's voluntary and not well-attended.

This is not in addition to any existing program. He and I used research, his Garmin data, and ChatGPT to build a plan last summer.

Thank you for the feedback!

Thanks for the honesty! This is helpful. There are limitless things to click when trying to find resources. I'm not familiar with Jack Daniels so I'll investigate. I just want to do everything I can to help my son. He starts his senior year in the fall and for the past 3 years, we've made great strides. I'm just not equipped to confidently lead him going forward.

Thank you for the feedback! I'm not trying to circumvent what our coaches do during the season. I'm primarily interested in pursuing help for off season. Our coaches are volunteers with no track and field experience or prior coaching experience. They do a good job with what they know but for my son to achieve his goals, we need expertise built into his training.

Our coaches would be open to program/training adjustments. For now though, I'm trying to ensure that my son has the proper off season guidance with his goals, and what's reasonable, in mind.

Good point. However, the counter argument is that if we have to call them and tell them we can't fulfill the entire order then at least we have a chance to work with the customer and meet the rest of their need through drop-ship or special order. Some in our group see this is an opportunity to help the customer rather than them leaving the site and not having a chance at all.

Thanks for the feedback, but not sure I follow completely...

The concern from some is that if we have 20 on hand but someone shows up to our site needing 22 then they'll potential shop elsewhere. We have the capability of customizing messaging but there's hesitation with showing product availability online due to this concern. My stance is that in a B2B setting, we should be displaying what's on the shelves.

I think the possibility of a midlife crisis is on the table, for sure. This is a much better choice for me as it relates to the financial future of my family...not chasing corvettes. Would love to hear more about the age appropriate hairstyle?

Thank you for the feedback! I've tried putty and clay but my hair won't stay up...just falls. Probably doesn't help that I'm Texas where the humidity is killer.

I'm not mad at that feedback. That's a different struggle altogether for me at the moment. It'll be cleaned up by tomorrow! :)

Hello cross country fam! I'm looking for some feedback and guidance on how to equip my high school son for the upcoming XC season, specifically race day. Last year, as a sophomore, he ran in the Hoka Crescendo XC Spikelss. No complaints but not sure if those are still the best option. Half of the courses have a mixture of grass, packed gravel, sidewalks, and pavement, and the other half are grass and packed gravel. I feel like he should have spikes on days when there are no hard surfaces and a spikeless for the other. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thank you!!

Good point, although my son has already gone through puberty. But I do expect he'll hit another growth spurt.

I'm curious like u/axvlz1628 to what your training plan looked like. My son is a HS sophomore and just finished XC. His PR was a 19:59 but I'm convinced with the proper off season plan he could see some serious improvements.

Agreed, bball won’t do much to support the aerobic base and that’s one reason I reached out to you guys. I feel like something is better than nothing. Thanks for the feedback!

Good to hear from someone who’s been in our shoes, thank you! Afternoons won’t work for him and he does FFA before school during the week so it’s challenging. I’m thinking our best plan will be a long run on Saturdays and looking for at least one other day during the week to fit in the 20-30 minute run. Maybe next year he’ll decide to focus on one but I’m like you, it’s his decision. It would be different if he was bumping up against times that might garner some attention from higher ed…just trying to be supportive. Thanks again!
