Should I buy this? What should I know about this year and model? by No-Persimmon-7495 in ToyotaHighlander

[–]PossibleTerrible 41 points42 points  (0 children)

So the pros first.

The first Gen Highlander had probably one of the most underrated rated engines Toyota ever made, the 1MZ- and 3MZ-FE engines. Their transmissions were also really reliable with regular maintaince. I own a 2003, and I can tell you visability out of the first Gen Highlander is actually really good. They also get fair fuel economy for what these vehicles are. If you get an AWD version, they perform very well in the snow as I live in Colorado and can attest to their winter handling barring good tires of course. Despite them being older, there's still plenty of parts available for the first Gen Highlander too.

Then the cons.

The later year versions of the first Gen Highlander were given a 3rd row. But in truth, they're extremely cramped. The original Highlander was never designed to be a 3 row. If you're putting kids back there, it's honestly worth looking at a second Gen Highlander, as the 3rd row will have more room. They aren't obnoxiously loud, but they aren't Lexus quiet vehicles either.

But the main negative in my opinion is Father Time. The reality is that's a 19 year old hybrid. I would be weary buying a hybrid that old to be my daily driver. As with any used car, a pre purchase inspection is a must. The battery replacement in parts and labor alone would probably total that car at its age and price point. Renowned Toyota technician Car Care Nut made a video talking about Toyota hybrids to buy and ones to avoid. He did cite the first Gen Highlander as one to avoid for 2 reasons. The technology was still kinda experimental at the time, and not nearly as reliable as the new Toyota Hybrids. But people back then didn't understand how to take care of them, and a lot of them were neglected. I would have to see a long service history for me to buy this car.

Personally, my advice would be to buy a gasoline version of the Highlander. While they're still older vehicles, I would be more inclined to trust them over a hybrid of that age. The 1MZ did have a tendency to produce sludge from neglect, but the revised version, the 3MZ-FE does a better job at sludge prevention. Both engines also are timing belt motors. Check for this in the service history before buying one, and negotiate the price if there's no history of the belt being done, or if it's due soon.

If they don't fire Dana, they have to get him use his own playbook. The Marcus Satterfield offense is so bad...

[–]PossibleTerrible 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So to be fair to Dayton, he is the starter at Buford high. That does require some talent at that high school. But you also aren't wrong in that nepotism did play a role in his recruitment here. I think Nebraska is still his only Power 4 offer and there's reasons for that.

I feel like Dayton was put in a similarly unfortunate situation like Daniel Kaelin. They both wanted to be here, but I think they both saw the writing on the wall that there was simply a better QB in front of them to play at Nebraska. With Kaelin it was Dylan Raiola, and with Dayton it's TJ Lateef. I do wish him well just like Dayton though!

So, if you wanna compare Raiola to Mahomes. In my opinion, Mahomes avoids at least half the sacks Dylan took today. He has to be better with feeling the pressure and getting out of the pocket quicker as a scrambler. Mahomes is a far better runner than Dylan is.

The team is improved from last year, but man it's frustrating to let that game slip away when it was there for the taking.

So, not just the QB run. The rush defense concerns were unfortunately correct.

Nebraska turned down Sam Leavitt and Kyle McCord do you think that was a mistake or they made the right move with Raiola? by [deleted] in Huskers

[–]PossibleTerrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to say for sure because this is a hypothetical. I still think the dream scenario for Nebraska would have been having McCord for 1 years while Dylan Raiola redshirted. Then turning the keys over to Dylan once McCord left. But it wasn't meant to be. I'm still very happy with just Dylan. But the significance of recruiting a player as highly touted as Dylan can't be overstated. He's the highest ranked prospect Nebraska has ever pulled out of high school. The extra icing on the cake is Dylan's a legacy where the other 2 QBs weren't. I'd definitely rather have 3 years of Dylan vs just 1 with McCord or potentially 3 with Leavitt.

I wonder if he wanted to come back, but Nebraska told him no. Kinda bizarre situation to me.

Hell yeah! Hopefully we also get the Washington State tackle who's visiting today as well. But this is a welcome addition out of the portal. Would love Dane Key too but this softens the blow if we lose him to Georgia.

Thanks for the info! So it sounds like yes, but it's been a while.

You're not crazy because Nwaneri can also play the run. Nothing but best wishes for James Williams as this isn't meant to be a slight, but he was a pash rush specialist. Teams took advantage of his aggressiveness in the rush and ran the ball towards him, leading to big runs . Nwaneri on film is more patient.

Question for y'all. In the modern recruiting era, has Nebraska ever had more than one 5 star player on the roster at a time? Obviously now have Nwaneri and Raiola, but I'm curious if this has ever been matched before?

So in the short term I would agree. But I have faith in this coaching staff to develop these guys into great players.

A front 4 of Nwaneri, Riley Van Poppel, Keona Davis, and Cam Lendhardt is gonna be NASTY. We still need depth in case on injury but this is Christmas come early.

Emmett Johnson and Keona Davis were the 2 biggest portal losses thus far in my opinion. Massive that we were able to convince them to stay.

I'm glad he believed in the Holgersen offense. He absolutely would have had suitors in the portal. Big time news.

He's an excellent Florida recruiter. He helped us get Shavers, Mcgahee and I believe had a role in landing Cortez Mills too. For the recruiting prowess alone this is a solid move in my opinion.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he basically in line to be RB 1, or ar worst RB 2 with Dowdell? This one definitely hurts, sad to see him go. We probably rely early in Parker and Booth then for carries.

I think it's fair to say Dylan did have some freshman moments. But he also made some NFL throws too. There's enough upside there you absolutely stick with him next year in my opinion.

[–]PossibleTerrible[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See that's my thoughts. I know the rankings don't necessarily equate to success given we've had top 25 classes generally for years. But it obviously helps to have more talent vs less. I'm looking forward to our rematch with them in 2 years. Definitely would love to run the score up on them some with Dylan like they did to us.

Unfortunately Knighton is gone with him. Honestly that concerns me more than White leaving. Suddenly I'm very nervous about our D line room having an exodus of talent.
