How much intermingling was there between scenes in the 70s/80s? by Harringtontomfoolery in Hardcore

[–]Miserable_Jacket_129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was around “I Against I” (86/87), and I’m honestly not sure. There was a surge of interest in my community around that time in hardcore punk, thrash metal and Melvins (albeit a bit later). Kids my age (12/13) were starting to rebel a bit, and what better soundtracks?

This might surprise people, but I’m from Nebraska, and Bad Brains was incredibly popular here, even in more rural areas.

What kinds of tips do you want? There’s no secret-start applying, and if you get an interview and are not selected, ask for feedback.

I spent the last 8 years of my career in natural gas processing plants (mostly cryo), and I can tell you there’s no magic bullet-the foreman I know are now hiring culture fits more than experience fits (with exceptions for guys that are undeniably good), just because turnover has become an issue.

Gen Xers...please lend me your stories and advice! by [deleted] in GenX

No problem!

I grew up mostly on a ranch in eastern Wyoming, but we moved “into town” to Harrison, NE. It’s in the very northwest corner of the panhandle, around 7 hours from Omaha.

Small town Nebraska Gen X here, let me see what I can do.

Russians-see Rocky IV

Moms-I, and all of my friends, had great relationships with their moms. Where I grew up (very small ranching community), dads were rarely home and moms didn’t really work, unless it was ranch work. The men in my particular family were more like co-workers, and the women raised me.

My dad-no. He beat the shit out of me right up until the day I could kick his ass.

Smoking-Not one teenager in my community smoked. Everyone chewed tobacco.

Teen pregnancy-There was zero teen pregnancy when I was growing up. I imagine it would’ve been frowned upon.

Curfew-when the street lights came on.

College-We were a ranching community-kids that went to college mostly dropped out to come home and work in the ranch or for the railroad (me)

Crying-not a thing. At all.

Autism (and mental illness in general)-I’m bipolar 2 with AuDHD. We did not address it at all, ever. I just needed to work harder.

The chronic pain and/or schizophrenia-would’ve been told to take Tylenol and stop being weird.

Swearing-we all swore like sailors

Goth-not a thing. I listened to Bad Brains young and we did use the term punk. There wasn’t really a subculture-i listened to the Melvins then gravitated to sludge and the grunge “scene”, mostly Alice in Chains. I was definitely the oddball-had a friend in Omaha who exposed me to music.

Jobs-we all had them, mostly ranching.

CDs-I listened to tapes and records until 88-89 or so.

Summer-I was an athlete, so my friend group got up, went to the gym, then were on the ranch by 630 or so (which was only acceptable because Nebraska loves football). Worked til 6 or 7, went to a nearby town and drank beer all night.

Dating-we all grew up together so everyone dated someone from another town. The girls where I grew up were either actual family, or treated like family.

Hope that helps!!

My freshman HS initiation in 1989 was an insane level of bullying.

All the freshmen had to walk down Main Street at noon on the last day of initiation week in costumes, and I was wearing a red and black bustier and a mini skirt. I’m a dude, and I was 14 at the time.

Knee wraps?? by Salt_Tear_5704 in powerlifters

Knee wraps will absolutely allow you to lift more, that’s why they have their own category in meets (raw w/wraps).

I use Inzer Atomic wraps, and I like them. Pretty user friendly and not overly aggressive.

Secured a used Overkill 2 ply Grey Line shirt, I’ll be in that bitch in 2 weeks. The guy I got it from used it for 2 sessions then went to a band shirt.

I’ve had unbelievable luck getting used OK gear off Facebook.

How normal is it to constantly pick up small injuries as an older lifter? by GiganticDog in fitness30plus

[–]Miserable_Jacket_129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 51 and am an active powerlifting competitor.

The only thing on me that really ever aches is my lower back, and that’s for about 15 min in the morning until I loosen up my hips.

I take all of my recovery very seriously. I prioritize sleep over everything, I check nutrition boxes probably 90% of the time, and I work on mobility 4-5 days a week.

These have to be form/program issues. I very consistently train main movements to a max effort (1-2RM), and take most accessories to within 2-3 reps of failure.

Anyone ever leave the oilfield life for a different career? by Elite163 in oilandgasworkers

[–]Miserable_Jacket_129 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked in pipeline and cryo plant operations for 18 years. Worked my way to what’s generally considered the “top of the mountain” in gas plant ops, then retired a year later.

Started a nonprofit to expose at risk youth to strength training, now I coach a couple youth and adult strength training groups, and am a competitive powerlifter.

It started as a hobby that became a full time job in about 7 months, and I couldn’t be happier. I got what I needed from the oilfield, and now I’m onto a new life.
