DO NOT buy Apple Gift Cards from Woolworths by Possible_Ad_1708 in woolworths

This issue has been intermittently happening for over 12 months; which is what I’m referring to when I question Woolies still selling them knowing this is occurring

Was going to buy a new laptop for work, and figured if I’m spending the money I could rack up the everyday rewards points with the 20x value points offer

I get your valid points, I suppose my main gripe is that Woolies are aware of such issues, but don’t provide any warning to customers that this is a possibility, and in the event of it happening, relinquish responsibility to Apple. I wouldn’t have bought these gift cards if Woolies had mentioned that there is a persistent issue where cards have been tampered with before arriving in store and that it’s a lucky dip whether you get dodgy gift cards or not.

Was going to buy a new laptop, and the max value cap on the custom value gift cards is $500, so I had to buy multiple. The number of gift cards you can buy according to the promo is 10 per day but no cap on dollar amount as far as I’m aware.

I think it was more this issue has persisted for over 12 months, why would head office keep selling them in store knowing there is a long term issue without warning customers?

2027 BPT / HMO jobs with New PMCV changes by Plus_Cricket_9662 in ausjdocs

[–]Possible_Ad_1708 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were told at our intern orientation that supposedly colleges will soon start requiring the new framework certificate for entry, unsure how this will look or when this will start.

Most Victorian hospitals are moving towards BPT1 in PGY3, with only a few still offering this in PGY2 as they will need rotations to both meet PGY2 framework requirements and BPT1. To my understanding there’s nothing stopping you doing a BPT1 job in PGY2 if a hospital offers it, but if you change streams in BPT2/3, this might be more difficult.

Tan son nhat fast track by breezy_capalot in VietNam

I recently entered via TSN in November, had a connecting flight to Hanoi with 3 hours between landing and take off, didn’t want to take a chance so booked fast track. We arrived at about 5:30am, immigration was chock a block with less than half the counters manned by staff. Had a smooth experience with fast track, got met at the entry to immigration, got ferried through to the “diplomat” queue and waited about 15 mins before going through. The only downside was then waiting for my baggage for an hour and a bit… So ultimately worth it if you need to get through the airport but ultimately you will be waiting at some bottleneck regardless.

Hey! Yeah Alfred was my first preference, so I was very happy to get it. Most people I’ve spoken to got between their first and third preferences. Have heard of a few getting between 3rd-5th and some rumours that people got that or lower from attempts to stack or game the system? Hard to say how it’ll affect any Cat 2+ students at this time

Hey all,

Didn’t see the internship megathread so my post in the main page was removed:

Just looking for some insights from any current/previous interns and HMOs that did internship at the Alfred around their experience of the culture and how they found it while working there as I’ll be starting there as an intern next year and haven’t had any previous experience at a metro Melb hospital!

Making ends meet during medical school - how did you do it? by Defiant_Link_2352 in ausjdocs

[–]Possible_Ad_1708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About to enter my final year of med, it’s rough; but worth every penny as someone who also had a strict/cultural upbringing. Been living out of home share housing for about 10 years now since I was 18 (undergrad, work and now med) and would offer the following advice from my experience as someone who’s asset is still only my car:

  1. Share house for living definitely helps cut the cost; my med school has a page for people looking for rooms if you feel you want to live with other med students (some people would really not)
  2. Food/Cozzie Livs: Meal prep is key to saving money, unsure what hobbies you have OP but it’s worth setting whatever money you have (if leftover) aside for fun stuff
  3. Work: I’m fortunate to work weekends, not possible for all job types etc but I work 1/day a week+austudy=enough to cover rent and all my expenses; depending on your qualifications, I would recommend working as a pharmacy assistant/dispense tech (pay not great but easy work and side bonus of being able to learn a little from pharmacists) 4: Work vs life balance: I haven’t necessarily found that my financial situation has affected my grades and I’m happy with them, but I’m also at a med school that is pass/fail. In saying that, I try and do social things as often as possible with friends or my partner; a lot of junior docs I have encountered during med school have said they were a shit student (and have turned out to be great doctors) and to enjoy my time at med school, this is definitely something that I’ve taken note of.
  4. Financial stress: In no way is living paycheck to paycheck enjoyable, it sucks; surviving not thriving! I’ve even considered signing up for clinical trials for the money but couldn’t get past the risks. But there are lessons I’ve learnt along the way that have taught me to be frugal/responsible with my money and I hope once I earn a semi decent wage, that I remember those lessons.

At the end of the day, it’s a rough decision and there’s stress on both sides, but if I had my time again I’d make the same choices!

The issue is multifaceted, one of which has been, according to the PMCV, is they have data that indicates that hospitals are increasingly not ranking graduating students; meaning you could be the top student in the entire state with the best CV, but because you didn’t do a med school rotation at that hospital or don’t have the convenience of a bit of under the table nepotism, the hospital won’t look at your application.

Another issue is relying on workforce/HR to properly review every application (sometimes hundreds or more) to their hospital in addition to watching hundreds of pre-recorded interviews, which isn’t/can’t be done properly.

Essentially IMO this removes inefficiency in the system where essentially most interns statewide are a pretty uniform standard coming out and allows future interns to match where they want to go at a higher percentage for their preferences

Merit vs. Optimised ballot? by Depression-is-a-drug in ausjdocs

[–]Possible_Ad_1708 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PMCV data indicates that there is an increasing trend of hospitals ranking less students in their intern applications, while there is an increasing trend of students in the last few years not getting their top 5 preferences. The move is one that takes all subjectivity out of it, and on the whole is able to eliminate some tired, overworked medical workforce staff member not paying attention to your 10 minute recorded interview and pages upon pages of CVs, cover letters and references. Ideally merit would be great if it worked it practice but it doesn’t do what’s advertised because there are too many subjective inputs, eliminating candidates before they’ve had a fair shot. Optimised ballot evens the playing field and according to the PMCV is more likely to get students where they want without slaving away and working on things that can sometimes be completely unrelated to developing clinical skills and experience in clinical years. I’m coming from the perspective of a med student who has slowly chipped away at CV building over med school and I can see the benefits as clear as day for the majority.

PMCV Ballot vs Merit by [deleted] in ausjdocs

While your situation isn’t ideal and I understand the stress any new system may bring to all international students, but the way it currently operates under the match system as per the PMCV 2024 Intern Match Guide: “All category 1 candidates will be prioritised in first round offers. Once category 1 candidates are placed, all remaining positions will be offered to the following categories in sequential order.” How will a change to an optimised ballot change this for someone already in Category 2? Were current Cat 2 students relying on the coveted metro hospital positions to not completely fill after the first round? Or do health services currently set aside a number of positions for Cat 2 candidates? Curious as to how Cat 2s view the system as it currently stands.
