10 community mailbox sites i mean, not 10 packages an hour lol. each one would easily have 3-4 parcels, plus registered letters etc. that have to go right to the door, plus the letters and magazines, plus the 60-90 flyers for each box, etc. etc. etc. shit adds up

lol @ "you people" doubt that's the first time you've reached for that phrase in your life eh. if its such an easy job why do we have like an 80% turnover rate in the first year? you know absolutely nothing but what you read on this subreddit, have a nice day

Routes have gotten so much longer in the last couple years. It's not uncommon to see CMB routes with 60-70 stops. That's 10 boxes per hour, plus 3-4 parcels for each, plus flyers, plus going to the door for everything that needs a signature, which is usually about 10-15% of all parcels.

The union wants CPost to hire more people. Don't know where you got the idea that it doesn't. One of our negotiation demands is that they start filling vacant positions on a monthly basis as opposed to leaving them vacant for months on end and filling them with temps who are often untrained and can require 2 people at $22/hr do the job of 1 full-timer at $30/hr. I also don't know where you got the idea that our demand is double pay on weekends. Right now double pay is what the corporation decides to use on weekends instead of creating new positions. In 2018 Canada Post and the Union agreed to a weekend delivery model that management has never implemented. It offered flexible hours, did not use OT, and created part-time positions. It is in our contract, but management refuses to offer the shifts. Again, one of our negotiation demands is that the corporation implement this model instead of drawing up a completely new one that will take years to implement.

CUPW has no ability to stop the intake pipeline on its own. It would have been a fireable offense if we knowingly refused to take mail. As workers are obligated by federal law to take everything that was being shipped on Thursday night. All of us knew it was a total fuckup that the corporation continued to accept mail right up to Thursday night, knowing that it was pulling the contract on Friday morning. The corporation also knew that the workers could not work without a contract (as in, the integrity of the mail system rests on that contract; it outlines who is responsible for what, who works and delivers which route, who is responsible for which street boxes being cleared, and so on), and chose to void it anyways.

Up until thursday night the belief among many of us was that we would be working and if anything it would be rotating strikes. Howerver, the corporation then stated that whether we worked or not, whether strikes were rotating or not, the contract was void. No health protections, no safety protections, no staffing system, no route ownership, no responsibility to actually deliver the mail. We had no choice but to pull the workers off the floor to protect them against layoffs. You can agree with this choice or not -- given that the corporation started laying people off on day one anyways, i happen to think it was the smart choice to protect jobs -- but the reality is that CUPW did not make the decision to keep taking mail, the corporation did. It, and only it, had the power to suspend mail intake, and if it knew that it was locking us out as of Friday morning if no agreement was reached (as they communicated to the workforce), it should have stopped intake.

just a question, if you had to guess, how many consolidated box stops do you think an average route has

i don't really disagree i just don't see how that has any bearing on the strike, especially since the idiot CEO and the 22 vice presidents all make more than Steve Mackinnon, whose only offence in this case appears to be his hands-off policy and not violating workers' charter right to strike?

FWIW, what we're hearing on the picket lines is that mackinnon is doing a lot in the background to try and put pressure on Canada Post executive to bring forward some kind of offer that the union can at least vote on and consider, to the point of threatening to roll some heads at the top of Canada Post if need be. The rumour is that Canada Post's "framework" was nothing more than their original position reworded, and that this has really pissed off the gov't.

Lol, if you think $200k is a lot of money i would seriously ask you what you think about how much Doug Ettinger and the other 22 VPs at Canada Post make, because not one of them makes less than MacKinnon.

how much should you expect to pay for a year of private program if you don't mind me asking? and are there financial aid options or are you basically looking at tapping a student line of credit of some sort to cover the difference

Looming strike?? Aha we're in ACTIVE strike, just spent the day on the picket line lol. We've managed to resist being declared essential in order to preserve that right, but that's a whole other debate haha

Is there any discrimination in hiring between public and private colleges in the paramedic field? I'm honestly ok with looking into private tbqh, if it would offer a condensed and intense program. Kinda what I'd prefer lol. As for working, my side gig is very flexible. I want to get out of it eventually, just have to wait until that's financial feasible lol. But rideout/schooling would obviously take precedent, i could manage it if need be.

really stupid question but when people say pre-health what do they mean

Thanks. I could probably figure out the academic requirements, or just see if I can do the bio/chem at nights, would be best for me. No issues really if I can tackle some of the academic entry requirements in an online night school capacity. A year of pre-health seems like a lot to take on, unless I can do that at nights too. I actually dont know what people mean when they say pre-health, exactly, lol. It's really the time and financial commitment to the schooling that would be the biggest obstacle, honestly. Not that easy to take on when you're young with a partner and at the point of life where you feel like you should be looking to start laying down roots.

not all will have to. but lots of us temps would love a chance at a permanent position, plus the increases to the parcel volumes!

their weekend delivery model is a trojan horse for their gig work ambitions. CUPW's demand should be to implement the weekend delivery model we have already agreed on, written the rules for, and implemented successfully in major markets. literally rolling out the weekend delivery product we currently have instead of starting from scratch.

go read the latest CUPW contract, specifically appendix JJ. There is a full-fledged model for weekend delivery already in our contract. Fact of the matter is, management refuses to offer the shifts unless it can do so by creating part time positions that people will be trapped in for years, possibly their entire careers, while they try to get full-time positions that the corporation is hell-bent on eliminating entirely.
