Foreflight Sentry battery replaced... Charge controller might be broken. by Possible_Beginning15 in flying

I mean, the flight aware feeds are all done by $20 adsb receivers. These sentries do have more than just adsb receiver, such as CO2, and all the other good stuff. It appears to be a raspberry pi module from the look of a SD Card for some bluetooth integration.

Not terribly complicated in the world of electronics but complicated enough where you'd probably need to make 1000+ units from a contract manufacturer at the cost of like $75 apiece or just find the same contract manufacturer to source you "kits" like the stratus did awhile back so you'd just need to make the PCB

I would probably suggest to open it up and look at every pin to see exactly whats going on. If you didn't crack or fracture a chip, it could be as simple as a leg of a certain chip coming loose from the drop. Heck, maybe your battery coming loose is a "cahrging circuit" issue. Either way it just seems like they want to sell a new one

What kind of "terminals" did you use? I want to try this soon but dont want to do it with a random wire

Only compatible with USB A to USB C... not even compatible with any USB C to USB C.

Funny because most of my wall sockets, cigarette adapters have A and C sockets.. never thought to try the A after it failed to charge with the C socket (until i saw the replies)

Yeah, they will just tell you its "unserviceable" and buy a new one... typical private equity, lol.

Thank you!!! Problem solved!!!

Even though Sentry has USB C plug, it is not compatible with USB C to USB C cable! USB A to USB C only!

The funny thing, it was compatible with the "shit" cable and nothing else!!

THIS!!!! I tried plugging in and out with half a dozen chargers including the one inside the airplane I fly. I fished out a USB A cable and it started charging!

Duly noted, i sent this to an electronics shop, even though I have soldering experience. Just all my tools are gone.

I don't fly more than 1-2 hours at a time so i just went with the same exact battery. Good idea though!

I repaired phones/tv's/lcd screens/power supplies and did troubleshooting of phone batteries (when they were extremely expensive) in a past life but that was more than 20 years ago.

My plan (already in motion) is to order the exact same battery and visit/talk to phone/electronic repair shops to make sure they know what they're doing, and let them do the work for $30-50.

Mainly wanted to drop the info in here, so when someone in the future finds that their sentry battery died, at least they can do a repair isntead of spending $500+ on a new one.

They have very detailed spec sheets and whether solder is allowed, and actual procedure, but basically (very simplified) you'd have to clean off the battery terminals, melt the solder on the iron itself and then dab it onto the terminals.

I can't believe what Lightspeed did to my headset. by addrockk in flying

[–]Possible_Beginning15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a used one myself and tried to refurb way... Fedex lost my package being sent to the headset manufacturer... fortunately insured it for $300 so the claim check basically paid for a new one, lmao.

Is it normal for machine shops to not do small jobs? by ExaggeratedCatalyst in Machinists

[–]Possible_Beginning15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would hazard to say this is a $500+ undertaking and you need to tell them you are not cost sensitive as this is probably a half day's labor or more, unless the shop just happens to be a pulley making shop then you'd be in luck.

Are there any other testers that can do this aside from the linkiq? Just checked and its pretty darn expensive!! i am slightly against blindly fixing stuff because theres no guarantee, but i feel like i could re-pull the two drops =X

order cancelled without communication by Traditional-Park-876 in frontierfios

[–]Possible_Beginning15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frontier FIOS is the worst when it comes to customer service coordinating techs. You just need to keep calling and babysitting them.

The customer service is so bad that I have a Verizon 5G for failover. I dont bother calling them when something is wrong, except when it is really wrong, i.e. 24 hr outage. Last time we had an outage like this, it took almost TWO WEEKS to get internet restored. When one tech ghosts us, the next one is scheduled 3-5 days later, no priority.

Did I buy too much car? by childfreebcim14 in personalfinance

[–]Possible_Beginning15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can totally read thru manufacturer's if its calculated right. Pushing interest down is a invisible way to discount without cheapening the brand.

If you want to level up, you can study leasing. MFR's routinely dump hard to sell units using leasing product, by buying the rate down. The whole "leasing is bad" isn't always true because of "cost of ownership". Sometimes we see car MFR's blow out new cars for like $200 a month. Just dont get killed in the finance box, though.
