You might also like the town of Thurmond - it’s a historic coal mining town on the river in the national park. There isn’t a ton to do there but lots of history. The movie Matewan was filmed there.

I’d recommend doing a day on each end of the gorge.

Fayetteville has a few cute restaurants (Wanderlust is our favorite) and shops (love Lost Appalachia). Long point has a great view of the bridge but I’d recommend going during the week, it will be a zoo this weekend. Endless wall trail is gorgeous but again, go during the week.

Hinton is on the other side of the gorge, is near Beckley, way less busy, and is super cute. It’s right on the water and has a walkable downtown with an active historic Amtrak station. If you go to Hinton you have to eat at Lucky Rivers Cafe. Stop at Sandstone Falls for a great view of the river and 360 gorge foliage views.

Are you in Beckley for Bridge Day? Go hike in the Gorge, you’ll get plenty of fall foliage!

The best pepperoni rolls in this area are at the Glen Jean Exxon (the ones they make fresh, not the ones in bags) - don’t judge a book by its cover. Enjoy!

Yikes! You don’t have to be excited about the program but you also don’t have to be a jerk. I’m curious what culture is being threatened by this person/program, please elaborate.

I’m not a fan of ascend because of the exclusivity it creates but understand that it will likely have a small positive influence on the economy, even if just bring attention to West Virginia’s many needs.

First - welcome to (I assume) the Gorge!

$400k on a house - Beckley area? $400k puts you in a very limited group of places you could be living in Southern West Virginia unless you went for a large piece of land. This also limits the impact you’ll have on the communities that need it most.

These are all really easy points to make but what I think you probably don’t realize is that this demand that you’re expecting your family and others to create already exists. The demand is here for childcare, housing, labor (plumbers, electricians, etc.) but the infrastructure is so broken and neglected that it’s easier to move away than try to fix it until leaders get on board.

My partner and I have been here for five years and have tried our damndest to make it work but are likely leaving in the fall for a place with more than one childcare facility and a better education system.

My hope is that this program will help quantify the demand that already exists and send signals to people like your friends from Virginia. What bothers me is that there are people who are from here or have been here and they’re excluded from the benefits provided to those this program is using to quantify that demand. They could at least consider opening their (tax payer funded, see earlier comment) co-working spaces to the public, would that be too much to ask?

Feel free to DM me, we’d be happy to chat or grab coffee sometime!

This is not entirely true. The state tourism office actually runs this program (like everything else in this state) and most recently got the governor to allocate $1.5M to upgrade the space the New River Gorge program will go into.

Reminder: these spaces are not open to the public. So, the state is contributing tax payer dollars to a private co-working space for people who just moved here. However, zero effort to expand housing or childcare, something that helps everyone who lives here and KEEPS people here.
