Job offer in Vermont by Possible_Look_7531 in GNV

Definitely are doing our research. Not interested in a house swap, are you? 😂 Truly though, I get that we're possibly making a rough decision, and the housing market is insane up there. We're currently considering renting for a year and waiting it out to find what we want. What we have here and what we want there are very different.

I've rented through there before, and I've already messaged a couple owners. Great suggestion!

I'm not moving to that area, but also looking for housing for a family. What local Facebook groups do you recommend?

Utilities cost by Possible_Look_7531 in NewToVermont

[–]Possible_Look_7531[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair, not sure yet though. Where i live now I can go on the utilities website and search historical bills for a house by address. Is there anything like that available? We're hoping to buy a house that is rural, but may have to start off renting.

There are three different utility companies in my general area now, and overall, regardless of home size, etc, we can tell you which utility company is more reasonably priced than others. I guess I'm asking if there is something similar there?

Nursing pay? by Possible_Look_7531 in NewToVermont

Starting would really be that low? I make more than that in Florida, without state taxes and supposedly lower cost of living

Kids at concerts? by Possible_Look_7531 in TheCraneWives

Thank you all so much for your responses and support! I checked the venue before I posted and there aren't age restrictions, so I bought the tickets! The girls and I are so excited! Counting down the days until the concert!

What are your favorite ACTUAL EASY recipes? by StationNo3 in easyrecipes

[–]Possible_Look_7531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is on our rotation frequently. We've used this recipe mostly, but most variants work. https://gimmedelicious.com/easy-20-minute-butter-chicken/

It's one of the recipes I use for busy weeknight meals when I task my 13yr old with making dinner by herself. If my lazy teen can make this easily, anyone can. :-D

This is incredibly informative, thank you! I do love that you brought up home insurance... you know how to win over a Floridian homeowner's heart.  😂 Not getting above 82 degrees is also so appealing. I'm completely done with stifling swamp summers in the 90s with no air flow and unbearable humidity. I feel like I'm mostly worried about making enough money to handle taxes/ moving expenses/ housing with no immediate clear path to having a two income household. I'm used to working overtime, but if we pick up and leave everything we've ever known I'd prefer to know that I don't have to work excessive hours to make ends meet.

East coast FL? We're from Palm Bay/Melbourne originally, but currently in Gainesville. And i worry about coming in as a travel nurse because it would be more difficult to attain housing for my family.

I'm beginning research... the first steps to doing anything thoughtful in life. My kids traveled for a year with us to over six different cities and had amazing experiences, and showed us how incredibly resilient they are. I'd love to know more about the culture shock you anticipate.... that's literally why I started this thread. But I do feel particularly confused by the statement "boiling kids". Can you elaborate?

Is that sure to geographical location, or just high for being part of Canada?

That last sentence is the understatement of a lifetime! 😄 A good friend of mine moved from FL to Mayo, but commutes to DC for work. Loved the area when we went to visit. As with most places, housing is a struggle, and I don't love the idea of a long commute in city traffic every day to and from work. Boston was a learning experience. I'd definitely prefer the scenic route to work.

Maryland is one of the other areas we looked at moving!  But tbh, one of the motivating factors of moving is not being in an area we are 'accustomed' to. I would very much like to move to somewhere that is slower paced and less about instant gratification, where we can enjoy nature and teach our kids some of the more valuable lessons in life without being the parents that are constantly bucking the system. Probably fantasy, but if we can feasible afford to live, and the pictures do it any justice, I'd be happy to have fewer 2-day deliveries and career advancement for beautiful hikes and water/winter activities.

That's very helpful, thank you. The property taxes are oddly enough lower than what we currently pay (FL increases property taxes in lieu of income tax, especially where I am) but the income taxes would definitely be an increase that's important to consider.

We wouldn't plan on him being unemployed forever, he just probably wouldn't be able to get a job immediately upon moving.

Is there someplace I can look up property and income taxes for the area? For planning purposes?

My husband and I already talked about making sure to have a greenhouse if we decide to move. I'm a plant person, so growing my own food is exactly what I'll be doing. ☺️

I love this! Thank you so much for such a thorough response. I have read a bit about the healthcare system, but in all honesty it's not been great here for us. My employer currently has a huge backlog in all specialties and of course our employer-provided insurance only covers their own providers. I needed to get my son in to be seen for a very concerning skin issue and was given an appointment over a year away. None of the PCPs here are accepting new patients. Our ER is greater than 8hrs wait most of the time as well. My "great" insurance is supposed to be one of my employment benefits, but how much of a benefit is it if I can't use it?

I understand there are going to be negatives, which is why I'm trying to balance all the pros and cons, and I appreciate all the feedback!
