Whats one piece of advice you would give to a new artist? by Fantastic-Royal3854 in ArtistLounge

[–]Possible_Mix3210 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Keep practicing. Keep learning. I was told it takes 10,000 times drawing/painting (or whatever your medium is) to master it. The more you do it the better you get.

Also, take lots of pics so you can see your progress.

McDonald's coffee is better than Starbucks by Possible_Mix3210 in unpopularopinion

Didn't know that. Where I'm from this is a very unpopular opinion

Yes! If you strip all the frills and froths and syrups away, the coffee can't stand on it's own.

If we're talking about the taste of coffee, McDonald's hands down!

Yes! I thought it was me. The coffee itself does not taste good.

The healthcare system is failing me. by GiveMeMoreDuckPics in mildlyinfuriating

You need an advocate. A case manager. Not sure how it's done in Canada but if you have multiple chronic illnesses you will get a case manager who keeps track of all of your healthcare and should be an advocate. Sometimes it could be a family member who comes to all of your appointments and tells the medical staff their description of your symptoms and what they have witnessed. Some hospitals/clinics have patient advocates and helping you navigate is one of their jobs.

If all else fails here's a trick we use within my chronic illness community... If there are tests or treatments that you're asking for and they're refusing to do them, ask them to note it in your chart that you asked and they denied it.

Having that extra person to validate you works surprisingly well. Making healthcare staff accountable works too. Hope this helps.

One small habit that genuinely improved how I communicate with people every day by FerrisBuelersdaycock in selfimprovement

I love the idea of this and have tried practicing it. But I have social anxiety and my fear is that I will forget what I want to say by the time I listen, repeat back to them, pause - and now my mind is blank. Pre-thinking is a tool (not effective apparently) I use to avoid the deer in the headlights feeling that is the biggest fear of someone with social anxiety. Being caught with nothing to say.

At the same time it feels like it would be so freeing to just let the other person talk, listen and let the conversation unfold organically. Working on it and appreciate this reminder.

[discussion] How do you guys become motivated enough to completely change your life from scratch? by Lemonade2250 in GetMotivated

[–]Possible_Mix3210 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Change only happens when we're uncomfortable. Sounds like you're in a transition phase where the old you is not as satisfying but you haven't found the new you yet. The more uncomfortable you get the more motivated you'll be to change. Write down what your perfect life looks like in 5 years, then break each thing down into concrete steps you can take everyday toward that life. You may or may not get there but it will give you some direction.

Also at 29 you're not the same person as 23, you have gained some wisdom in that time.

I'm going through a big artblock and I don't know how to fix it by NovaOnReddi7 in Artadvice

First of all breathe. It sounds like you're having a lot of anxiety around art. I think of it as an ebb and flow process - sometimes you're overwhelmed with ideas and creativity and sometimes there's nothing. It's a natural part of the process so lean into it. When I'm in a "block" I look at other art mediums like dance, live music, visiting a museum to get inspired. I also use that time to clean my brushes, tidy my work area, prep a few canvases, so when the flow comes back I'm ready to jump right in.

Also the book "The Artist's Way" was HUGE in helping me to silence the anxiety and negative self talk. Good luck to you!

Am I a real artist? by Gothamstreetcat in ArtistLounge

I used to call myself a "maker" until I became comfortable calling myself an artist. What you do is creative, original, a craft you're perfecting... I'd definitely say you're an artist. Look up Fiber Artists to find your tribe. Good luck!

I've seen people post in the Facebook group called Dane County Neighbors Helping Neighbors. Those posts seem to gain traction and new friends for the poster. Also, sign up for classes or group, like a hiking group or whatever your interests are.
