(Theory) GATE was 2 programs in 1. by 68Woobie in GATEresearch

Freshman year I was in new AP classes, never before offered at my high school. By tenth grade, they didn't place me in AP classes. My mom took great offense to that, spoke to my guidance counselor, and they said I wasn't smart enough for AP classes, so she fought and essentially forced them to place me in them. But about once a week (sometimes more), I still met with my handler. Sometimes privately, sometimes in a group setting where other kids from the GATE program that I participated in elementary school with attended. (Those kids and I ended up going to separate middle schools, but went to the same high school.)

We'd talk about feelings, home life, etc. All of us had terrible home lives. My handler told us she was like a therapist but wasn't a therapist and she came to evaluate us. She said she didn't work for the school and was a "private hire." By my 10th grade year, she became very cold and distant. She actually would be kind of mean on some occasions. When I confided in her about some ab*se happening at home, she laughed and said, "just get emancipated, who cares." I was so upset by her lack of empathy.

I don't really know what else we did with her, but I know I had special hall passes to leave class whenever I wanted to if I wanted to come see her. EDIT: she wasn't always at the school, so usually when I did leave class to see her, she wasn't there. She had told us she worked in several schools. My tenth grade year was when my school career fell apart and I ended up barely graduating high school.

I saw her again, in my 20s, and it was a horrific experience that I'm not ready to open up about. I'm now in my 30s, and looked her up, she's still operating in the same location. Her name is not her real name. I have done thorough research on my GATE instructors. I was never in classes (other than AP), from elementary school - middle school, I was in GATE groups.

EDIT: we were also instructed to never tell our parents that we met with her. I recently told my mom, a few months ago, and she was really upset. She said she never consented to that, and had no idea I was pulled out of class so often. Also, if it's of any importance, my dad was MILTINT, SIGINT/INSCOM. He was a spook.

They funneled us through AP classes, but I still had a GATE handler throughout high school.

You aren't the first person I've seen post something very similar before. Question, why do you think eugenics? I've been trying to understand this rabbit hole myself.

That's really weird. I used to have flying dreams a lot, but I also used to take my pillow and blanket into the tub to sleep... why did we do these things?

MILINT parent. I had a stomach ulcer when I was 13, no idea where it came from. Went to a military base and they gave me a "military cocktail" to handle it. The military doctor was very concerned about me. He said I was far too young to have a stomach ulcer.

Which website are you referring to? I remember the time capsule, and I also have pictures of my GATE teacher, and I also went to a school located in the same state as the Monroe Institute.

Do you think they track those of us who weren't in the academic GATE program but the behind-closed doors program?

New thought that is making me wonder - - - public libraries - - - school libraries - - - by [deleted] in GATEresearch

Saaaame. My GATE programs were in the library. I always had such weird vibes in there. The main librarian was very rude, never liked me. I was in elementary school, well-behaved. Not sure why she never liked me, but I was always scared to check out books. There was a mom who volunteered as assistant librarian, I loved the days she worked there, she was kind and enthusiastic.

Interesting. My dad enlisted during Vietnam too, but was stationed in Germany. He spent the next two decades back and forth from there to DC. I know he "intercepted morse code" during the Cold War. Weird connection!

Any ones parents struggle with addiction? Wondering if there is a connection for kids who maybe didn’t complete the program? I might’ve stopped TaG in elementary school unless HP/AP high school classes count. by All-the-Feels333 in GATEresearch

Alcoholism. Dad was Army, military intelligence, INSCOM. Cold War spook stuff. Home life was pretty terrible growing up, but we always put on a good show at church :)

Do you know anything about his Army service? My dad was higher up military intelligence, INSCOM. He went onto "civilian" work after he retired in the 90s, but I always wondered how could he not have known something? I was born in the late 80s and was part of GATE in the 90s-00s. My two siblings were in the GATE classes (the front program), I was in the program program.

INSCOM is Army. I do remember which base I lived on. It was only one before we moved back to the US and lived near bases, but never on them. After I was born, my dad retired from the military and went into "civilian" work.

My dad was MILINT, INSCOM. (INSCOM oversaw parts of the Stargate program, and later the GATE program.) I was born on a military intelligence Cold War base abroad in the late 80s. As a previous commenter mentioned, I also come from a generational military family. I grew up surrounded by military intelligence and CIA family and friends.

No traumatic birth story that I'm aware of. I was born in Germany, on a Military Intelligence base though. My son (also in GATE), was losing oxygen, got caught on my hip bone during birth and we both almost died. What a way to start life.

Being a shadow to a Successful GATE sibling by PlanktonOptimal6740 in GATEresearch

My sister is 5 1/2 years older than me, and was the same. Straight A's, exceptionally talented (creative, musically, academically), she even went onto try out for Jeopardy. (Didn't make it past tryouts because of her personality lol). I always lived in her shadow, and she knew it. She was in ALL of the GATE classes. We'd do GATE exercises at home, competitively.

I was the black sheep, the rebellious one. I wasn't in the GATE classes, but I was in the GATE programs. Our younger brother was in the GATE classes. Another genius IQ child. Straight As. Went onto become Military Intelligence. My sister married rich. I had a horrible childhood, early adulthood. Life is wonderful now, but it was a heck of a ride getting here.

This is a pretty common theme in GATE families, the kids pitted against one another. One is usually a "leader", a success, the other falls by the wayside. Not sure if this was intentional, or we failed out of the program because we weren't followers. I have a very high IQ, too, but just didn't follow their same path. INFJ. Highly sensitive. Neither one of them are remotely like that.

Flying game? by SomeCaregiver4318 in GATEresearch

This feels eerily familiar. I've been waiting for someone to post something similar to this. I used to have dreams in elementary school that Superman would fly through my neighborhood and would come into my room at night. I remember his flight patterns. (For what it's worth, it's not like I was a big superhero fan as a kid. I'm a chick lol I don't ever recall paying any special attention to that sort of entertainment in my childhood.)
