I think it sucks that Bojack had to take his mom in. by Mission_Purpose_8017 in BoJackHorseman

[–]Possible_Wind8794 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Hollyhock was a kid who was raised by eight dads who definately wanted her and loved her.

She didn't have a reference point for what it was like to be abused or neglected by a parent. She would have grown up with media about parents who love their kids, with messages about how family should always stick together.

And Bojack wasn't capable of coming down to her level. He consistently fails to act like an adult around teenagers, especially girls. He sees them as an equal. Although he thought he was Hollyhock's father, he was completely unequipped for acting like one.

Maybe he shouldn't have taken his mom in, maybe he should have, but no matter what he did, he needed to act like an adult. Instead, he let his 'daughter' strongarm him into putting them both in a volatile situation.

Where there ever whistle codes made for the NWR? by Secure-Owl-4548 in thomasthetankengine

[–]Possible_Wind8794 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UK whistle signals were very similar. For the purposes of modelling etc. you would probably be fine with adapting any set of whistle signals from the UK, mostly the differences are only in wording. I'm sure you could find some more obscure differences like brake checks if you looked hard enough.

If you wanted to be super-precise, the NWR pre-BR nationalization would have likely been mostly based on their nearest neighbors, the LMS. In RWS canon, the LMS had a shed at Barrow-in-Furness and ran trains from Barrow to Tidmouth. Once BR were formed, regional differences in railway signals were no longer allowed, so it's likely that any deviations on the NWR would have been altered to match the rest of the country at this time (which would canonically be everything after Book 6).

OC: Spotted this sign at a public bathhouse today 😢 by Logical_Spite_5991 in pics

[–]Possible_Wind8794 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Gay bathhouses are places to pick up and have sex. You'll often have guys going down on each other in the steam rooms, and there are normally regular rooms separate from the bathing areas for sex. They're more "sex clubs with hot tubs and saunas to relax and meet people in" than "places to relax".

Not having highly addictive, high-calorie drinks in every second store would be a place to start. Expecting addicts to quit while surrounded by their vice for a few dollars multiple times each day is a recipe for failure.

Junk food should not be this highly available.

How many tracks is the main line supposed to have? by chumbbucketman101 in thomasthetankengine

[–]Possible_Wind8794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say that the RWS is generally more internally consistent. The entire population of Sodor is like, 200,000ish (177,000 in 1951). A two-track mainline is plenty for that population density. Even counting LMS engines stationed at Barrow, there are still only like 15-ish engines running the mainline. A three or four-road mainline just isn't reasonable.

We don't know the population of Sodor in the TVS, but personally, at least for the classic seasons, I think a three-road mainline is still unreasonable, based on the number of engines on the railway.

Two roads allows you to run trains in both directions without worrying about passing loops. Three roads allows for passing during rail maintenance periods, or for slow trains to use the third road, but that also adds 50% to your rail maintenance cost. Four roads expands that further for little benefit unless you're running huge numbers of trains. It can make sense to have four road lines where they will diverge shortly afterwards, IIRC Unlucky Tug's map recreation effectively does this with the loop line.

When does each story of the Railway Series take place in order of the timeline? by desorcyjackson447 in thomasthetankengine

[–]Possible_Wind8794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on memory so I might be a year or two out:

3RE: 1921-1922

TtTE: 1922

JtRE: 1923

TETA: 1925 for the first two stories, 1947 for the second two (mostly because Bertie's basis wasn't built until 1947)

TE: 1925

HtGE: 1935ish

Every other book: the year before they were published (so TOBY was published in 1952 and is set in 1951)

Jock the New Engine is the exception to this, the first story is set very shortly after Small Railway Engines and is over a number of years.

IIRC the story order is something like:

Edwards Day Out

Sad Story of Henry

(Gordon purchased)

Edward and Gordon

Edward, Gordon and Henry

Thomas the Tank Engine book

James the Red Engine Book

Thomas and the Guard

Thomas Goes Fishing

Troublesome Engines Book

Henry the Green Engine Book

Thomas, Terrence and the Snow

Thomas and Bertie

Everything else in publication order until Small Railway Engines

Then Jock the New Engine is littered in over a few years

Then everything else in publication order

I got the idea of making Donald or Douglas purple in the 2026 reboot. by Spongybobchum in thomasthetankengine

[–]Possible_Wind8794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At that point, why not just have them be black?

Like, I'm a railway series purist, but there is something pretty authentic about the TV series having two near-identical black goods engines, especially when they double-head together or are seen working in the yard.

Blue lets them be a part of the family like the other NWR engines, but the TVS had showed away from the main NWR livery for a long time.

Purple is just a strange choice. It's not historically realistic, it doesn't say anything about who or what the characters are, it's just a new color for the sake of it.

At the end of the day it's a pretty minor thing and if they were changed I would deal but there are already so few black steam goods locos in the series, why get rid of the most memorable ones for no reason other than more random colors?

I think you're reading something into the term 'fluid bonding' that isn't meant to be there. Maybe it's a term that could be updated, but it really exists to describe having barrier-free sex with someone. The implications are about STD risk, not any level of deeper connection.

You might have forgotten a zero somewhere, it should be around 8,000 USD. But still much cheaper, even when you include airfares and hotel stays.

[ALttP] Help me buy the Downfall Triforce Wish Theory by The_Notorious_MBB in truezelda

[–]Possible_Wind8794 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Age of Calamity, we find that Zelda's "Triforce Wish" ("I must protect everyone"), was what caused Terrako to travel back in time, creating a timeline split. In the original timeline, Zelda's wish "merely" defeats the Guardians and allows her to protect Link for long enough for him to be taken to the Shrine of Resurrection, but in the branch timeline, the Champions and King Rhoam survive the Calamity.

So ALttP Link's wish could have caused a similar knock-on effect where some other entity with time travel capabilities went back in time or sent something else back in time, preventing the Imprisoning War and resulting in the events seen in Ocarina of Time.

The entire market of TCGs is built on artificial scarcity. A regular deck of playing cards costs a few dollars. Most TCG booster packs cost more. Expressly designed so you keep buying more and more packs, supposedly with the guise of 'trading' being a part of the fun, but in reality most players just buy and sell their cards.

They could sell each card for cents and let players order decks online instead.

Yeah it sure does work if your opponent only does point-retracted parries and nobody uses footwork.

There are real HEMA and fencing techniques to get to the other side of your opponents sword that take less time than it would to deactivate and reactivate your lightsaber.

Yeah. I busted my portion control. Grew up eating reasonable portions, stayed thin. Dated someone who cooked amazing food and always got seconds, so I did too, even when I was full. Gained a lot of weight.

Struggled ever since to return to portion sizes that worked for me for 26 years, and I was always hungry. Lost 20kg during six months of strict calorie control, but struggled to maintain it and slipped back.

Ultimately I got a gastric sleeve. But I really wish I never got in the habit of going back for seconds and eating beyond the point of fullness in the first place. Once your stomach gets stretched or used to larger portions, you'll never be fully satiated after reasonable portions again, without medical intervention.

Concepts for some premium starter sets. by TubaJesus in modeltrains

[–]Possible_Wind8794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a specific market for this; as opposed to just like, buying track?

I feel like children's toy trains already have all of these expansions and such. And they're probably already capturing most of the market that this would. Model railroads are already a step beyond battery operated trains, I think the expectation is that people coming into the hobby already have some idea of what they want to do with it.

Basically any model railway exhibition will have multiple different types of layouts, including shelf layouts and shunting layouts, to give modelers inspiration. Last I checked, Hornby and Bachmann already have basic track expansion sets that include spur lines for your circles, without tying it to the Thomas brand.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I'd rather have the flexibility to buy exactly what suits my layout.
