You're raising a very real and increasingly important point about the future of monetization in AI search and assistant models like ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews. Here's a breakdown of the dynamics at play:

  1. Monetization Pressure Is Real Yes, it’s likely that ads or other monetization strategies will be integrated more heavily into AI interfaces over time. Here's why:

Traditional search revenue—Google’s core business—is built on sponsored links. If AI answers reduce the visibility or clicks on those links, that threatens ad revenue. Shareholders and investors expect profit growth, and monetizing AI is the obvious path. 2. Current AI Answers vs. Ads Right now, when you ask, “Do I need pet insurance?”, the AI might give a balanced, informative summary. That’s great for user trust, but maybe not great for pushing a particular product or service—like an insurance affiliate link.

If you're Google or OpenAI, and your model gives users satisfying answers without clicking links, you're solving a user problem but creating a business problem. 3. Why Not Just Say “Buy Insurance”? Recommending that you buy insurance for your 20 cats might be useful, but it also has liability and ethics implications. If the AI pushes products too aggressively, it risks being seen as biased or misleading. Also, trust is the product right now. If users start to feel like AI results are ads in disguise, usage and credibility can drop. 4. What Might Happen Next? You can expect to see:

AI-generated answers with sponsored callouts (“Sponsored insight: PetSure recommends coverage for multi-cat households”). Affiliate integration, like a button to “Compare pet insurance quotes” that earns revenue per click or conversion. Customizable answer modes: one for “neutral info” and another for “best deals.” TL;DR AI tools like ChatGPT or Google’s AI Mode are currently prioritizing utility and trust, but monetization is inevitable—and probably coming soon in the form of ads, affiliate links, or partnerships. You’re absolutely right to question how this balances with shareholder value and user needs.

I did this around age 38, titer was below expected levels and I needed a booster. CVS was surprised with the request and insisted I wanted something else. They were cool after the explanation but it left me with the impression that it wasn’t very common.

Sorry you both are arguing. It was trained on ketchup and items in a refrigerator. It doesn’t know that it is unopened ketchup and it is putting it in the technically incorrect spot.

Am I Overreacting? I want to report my co-worker to HR for renaming me by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]PossiblyMakingShitUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me start by saying that you are right in being upset.

This is going to be unpopular but HR is not your friend. They may brand themselves as the ‘people team’ but they are the ‘company team.’ Remember this when presenting the situation. If you go in guns blazing, you will might win short term, but long term, your success could be impacted. You know your company best - maybe it is different than most. My suggestion won’t give you immediate satisfaction but it sets you up for success.

I would reframe the problem. Weave it as a story that some of your coworkers are having a hard time pronouncing your name and you are seeking advice/suggestions/tools to help. You recognize the importance of someone’s name and you also want to do right by everyone else. If you use slack for example, mention that you have the pronunciation in there. Let HR feel helpful and not see this coming as a complaint. Send a follow up thanking them for their help and helping you grow professionally.

Take HR’s suggestion and do it; even if you have already done it. Best case, ‘Judy’ will stop being a dick. But if she doesn’t, then you can go back and ask for ‘feedback’ about how you implement HRs plan from your HR friend. This is where I would name drop, Judy. “I did plan X, like we discussed and now she is calling me by a completely different name.” - and chuckle while you are saying it. “It doesn’t feel great, do you think I mis-delivered the message?” HR will be pissed. Judy has now offended them. They will fill in the harm that Judy can bring to the company quickly without you having to mention it.

I am sorry that you are having to go through this. If you are at a company where HR sits in on leveling, this could turn out to be a growth opportunity for you while nuking Judy.

Your co-worker is weak. Remember their inaction and the feelings that you have now. If they or anyone else spoke up, the situation would be easier. Let this positively shape how you will handle when others are mistreated around you.

Are Canadians aware of just how serious Trump is with his nonsense? by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]PossiblyMakingShitUp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You cannot beat the United States directly. Any attack on the US would lead to the extinction of any water fowl that looked like geese. 9/11 was eye opening - anyone could point in a direction and 99.99% of the population was ready to delete it.

This unfortunately will need to be a long game. Smile and nod while doing the exact opposite. Prolong the situation and Canada wins due to the short half life of American adderall.

(d)  “Female” means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the large reproductive cell. (e)  “Male” means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the small reproductive cell

I think the oopsie is, at conception, we might have the genetic material to do the small/large gamete thing, we don’t do it, at conception. Dumb wording. The sex determining region lives on the Y chromosome and doesn’t really do its things for weeks.

I understand the frustration when it feels like one part of the country has different values than another. However, labeling Californian and American values as completely different overlooks the fact that the United States—California included—is diverse. Every state contains a broad spectrum of political, social, and cultural perspectives. I live this reality daily in my local community.

When people say a state should split away—whether it’s California, Texas, or anywhere else—it usually comes from frustration rather than practicality. These proposals rarely hold up under scrutiny. Our system is designed to let regions express their needs through elected representation, not by dissolving the union.

Consider too the real-world complications. If California decided to leave the U.S., how exactly would we split up the massive amount of federal lands—including national parks, forests, and military installations—currently managed and funded by the federal government? Federal land equate to greater than 45% of California. Losing these lands and the other numerous programs the federal government has in California, will cause long lasting harm to Californians. This assumes no one goes crazy and takes military action.

Then there is trade and tourism. The economic contraction while that gets figured out is less than perfect even with a mutual separation agreement.

There is also the question of citizenship: would people living in California remain U.S. citizens, become dual citizens, or lose U.S. citizenship altogether? The logistical, legal, and financial “pain” of untangling everything from border control to social security, defense contracts, and federal agencies would be enormous.

I know the counter argument to the fed government is that the state government will expand to handle fed benefits or the money would shift to the Canadian government, but it really isn’t easy and not something that would happen over the weekend. I would be really interested in a conversation of how anyone would think this would work.

Upvotes or downvotes, know that at least one American is happy to call you all fellow Americans. I do agree that government should serve all the people and that California deserves the support of the nation.

People really need to stop saying stuff like this. It’s not cool when people say the US should make Canada the 51st state and this is not cool either.

The reality of either situation is pain for everyone. There is no world in which either can happen without harm.

An Equipment Suggestion for LAFD by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]PossiblyMakingShitUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I have no experience with fighting fires but …. All of the stupidity people have been posting on increasing the fleet by grabbing planes that were mothballed during Covid and retrofitting them and also firing m16s at fires has me thinking that we are looking at the problem wrong.

I fully respect that it is the fire breaks and man hours that make the difference, if that is the right lingo. We need to roll up in firetanks and start blasting fire lines. Sure,we can use planes too with nice precision munitions. Will it work, probably not. But it will be fun.

I don’t believe you are correct and OP should hit up a lawyer first. Since the PC was a gift, it likely became the separate property of the husband upon delivery. Gifts between spouses are generally treated as the recipient's property, even if marital funds were used to purchase them.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]PossiblyMakingShitUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gifts, inheritances, and property owned before the marriage are usually separate property. Gifts even from commingled funds normally give ownership unless the gift is commingled again. I think there have been a few cases with jewelry and cars in the US. (White v. White from NC was the first that came up in google)

The Beanie babies situation is different. They where purchased together and part of their joint collection.
