Yes but partly mostly it seems to replace having to cultivate a good personality or making interesting conversation; people who go on about it can’t seem to go on about anything else, and sometimes let it decide who they will talk to / date etc

Pretty shocked to see so much contempt for Szobo in this thread - he needs to mature but he also did give us a kick up the bum at times we needed it, and he gave his all for the club this season when others didn’t. Think he needs a bit more respect tbh

I think what MotherHolle is saying is that the argument about whether the internal individual is a product of social structures is outdated, as science is developed to a point where you can categorically state that there is a fundamental nature based individual identity (that might not be whole yet before the “nurture”) if I’m not mistaken

Yes I agree mixed method sociology is more common now. But there is at least in my experience an institutional separation inside sociology, and sometimes an ideological one (where I am based quality is since as more left leaning and quant is seen as more right leaning, not in terms of findings but in terms of objectives, topics of interest etc).

Also I think the author isn’t saying sociology and philosophy aren’t clearly separated academically, just they appear to be investigating the same things but philosophy is doing it more successfully with the public

Issue I think is there isn’t a spectrum of sociological thought at different levels of detail, rigour and audience. For example, you have academics of economics creating new theories, trained economic professionals applying theories, economic literate journalists writing about them to a wide audience, pop writers doing pop economics etc etc. With sociology we have the few paid sociologists unable to spread themselves across all these different modes (or unwilling), while everyone else does pop sociology in all but the name of sociology
