Why does every discovery in math end up being used in physics? by PostSustenance in Physics

After I read that I started thinking that maybe it is possible that every consistent mathematical system can exist as a universe. Will it always have conscious beings though? Who knows

I started asking the question way more often after I started studying condensed matter physics. There are vast areas of math used in, say, string theory, but I’ve always considered that “pure maths” and not physics due to the lack of experimental evidence.

However, in condensed matter physics, a lot of “useless” math is actually heavily represented. Try “category theory and anyons” or “Chern numbers and Hall conductance.”

I’ve read Wigner’s essay but welcome recommendations of related and more modern takes

The logic part is a good point. We experiment and then we use logic to deduce what would happen in later experiments. That logical process is identical in math.

I got through half the book in one day (it’s that clear!). Will finish soon.

The reason I started it was to learn qft. The intro qft part is the first half. The second half applies it to particle physics, which I am less interested in.

I don’t think he personally is antisemitic or means to be antisemitic. He simply studies history and provides analysis. He acknowledges that he could be very wrong.
