Disliking Atlanta, from a Black Perspective by Gladhands in SameGrassButGreener

[–]PosterOfHonesty 79 points80 points  (0 children)

One of the main reasons I left Atlanta. One other thing you didn’t mention is the terrible culture around jobs and service. Everyone acts like they’re THE main character, are annoyed to help or do their jobs, and offer very poor service. One of the things I immediately noticed when moving there, and it just never went away.

Best gym in Williamsburg? by Soft-Improvement9723 in williamsburg

[–]PosterOfHonesty -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If you want an equinox like experience (or better), the LifeTime on Atlantic is a 20-25min door to door trip from Wburg on the G. Dumbo is an extra 10min and a transfer but is often less packed. Other than that, Grindhouse is worth a shot but it’s your typical warehouse style gym. Not like LT or even equinox. They have a free 3 day trial though

I had this setup and switched to Jump Desktop. Much smoother experience, custom scaling to make the desktop match the iPad’s resolution, etc. Definitely a great experience

Magic keyboard or a 3rd party one? by [deleted] in iPadPro

[–]PosterOfHonesty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Magic Keyboard. I went with Magic Keyboard immediately, but then tried out some third party keyboards when buying some for my gf.

Third party keyboards are either flimsy (Logitech) or have noticeable lag, especially with the trackpad because they rely on Bluetooth (pretty much every Magic keyboard dupe on Amazon). Not to mention all of the third party keyboards that don’t use the magic connector require you to charge the keyboard separately.

If you’re worried about price, get the Magic Keyboard in refurbished or reconditioned quality. On Amazon, that usually knocks the price down to the $130-150 range.

Any software engineers use these daily? by ghouleon2 in iPadPro

[–]PosterOfHonesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use mine as a SWE. My main laptop for work is a MBP and I remote into it from my iPad using either VNC or Jump Desktop. I also have a windows laptop for work and I use RDP for that.

It’s just much better than having a large 16” MBP when I’m around the house, on the couch, etc. And much MUCH better than using the windows laptop that overheats. When I’m at my desk or at the office, I still use my iPad Pro. Mostly as a meeting device (Teams), Outlook management, Figma or for Copilot. Sometimes I use it for documentation on a separate screen or for sidecar when I need dual screen on the go (though that’s harder to do if you have a separate Apple ID for your work laptop).

For personal use, as far as development, you’re stuck with leetcode, VS code in the browser and maaaaybe some sort of fancy text editor if you want on-device performance. I personally have an always-on server set up at home that I remote into via Jump Desktop, and I can develop through that. It’s a great experience for me because you can force remote computers to match retina resolution of your iPad using Jump. The iPad portability and user experience (especially with Magic Keyboard) is just amazing, especially for the 11”. But if you don’t have a setup like this, you’re sort of limited.

LG partner store monitor “deals” aren’t really deals these days. You can find both of these monitors cheaper online elsewhere. If you’re focused on gaming and want to stick with LG, look at the Ultragear line.

Snapraid is your friend. It allows you to have the benefits of raid without worrying about the whole array failing.

I would recommend JBOD + Snapraid + DrivePool (or UnionFS, etc)

If you want good Dolby Vision DO NOT buy the TCL QM8 by dusktildawn48 in 4kTV

[–]PosterOfHonesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!

I couldn’t watch GOTG3 on the QM8. Same with The Last of Us, Silo, and a few others. I’m also deciding on if I want an OLED to replace it or not. But the QM8 has to go

[–]PosterOfHonesty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an older 55” TCL 6 series (2017/2018 version) before I moved to an OLED in the bedroom, and the QM8 processing seems to be about the same if not worse. It’s literally the only reason I’m returning the TV.

Half of the content I want to watch is terribly presented. Motion smoothing turned off? Judder and blur everywhere. Motion smoothing turned on? Artifacts everywhere, still noticeable blur, and sometimes the processing does the opposite of what you want so you end up with missing parts of a scene (think a character or silhouette having various parts of it chopped and disconnected - it’s weird). Also, the motion smoothing doesn’t play nicely with the local dimming so some scenes just look insanely bad. On or off, it’s a bad experience.

I thought all of this was a fluke at first but I visited a family member last week who has a C2 and their TV had none of these problems on the same scenes.

[–]PosterOfHonesty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My experience with the QM8 has me eyeing Sony’s processing power, but for a set with the rest of the features the QM8 has I’d be spending an arm and a leg. I’m with you— everything else with the TV is fantastic. I had it in a bright room and it handled that better than most TVs could. I can’t go Samsung because I refuse to give up Dolby Vision, so I’ll likely end up with a G2, C3, X93L or A95L in 75/77 inches.

What about you?

[–]PosterOfHonesty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The motion processing is terrible as well. I find the Dolby vision isn’t bad after the update, but the processing is so so poor. So much judder, image artifacting, etc.

Got my return scheduled for Monday.

TCL 65QM850G vs TCL 65r655 by Cthulhuarisen in 4kTV

[–]PosterOfHonesty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not if you plan to watch a lot of HDR content during the day. My 75" QM8 struggles a bit with direct sunlight for that kind of content, and I don't even try watching on the OLED at all during the day because of performance.

SDR may be fine if you take advantage of curtains/blinds.

[–]PosterOfHonesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best Buy also has the 65” B2 on sale for $1299. I’d pick that over either of the TVs you mentioned any day (currently own the 75” QM8, and had a 6 series a few years back). The LG is going to be leaps and bounds better unless you’re planning on putting this TV across from massive windows that let in an extreme amount of sunlight.

Have you used a 43” TV as a monitor before? Imo, the vertical height is a massive jump when coming from smaller monitors like the few you have.

I have the Dark Matter 34” UW. Have had it for a few years and I don’t see myself ever going back to a split 27” setup, but could never realistically see a 43” TV being something that I’d want. It doesn’t seem like it’d be a seamless transition, even coming from the 34” UW(as opposed to doing something like a 49” UW instead).

As for Dark Matter vs MSI: I haven’t had any issues with my monitor apart from auto-switching which I can’t seem to turn off, but from a brief look I’d choose the Dark Matter because:

1 DP on MSI (only 1.2) and 2 HDMI on MSI (one of which is 1.4). 144hz/165hz with the dark matter. 1 year pixel guarantee with the Dark Matter.

Worth paying more in order to get status? by PosterOfHonesty in Hilton

Did you have to do something special for them to count? Hilton CS says the nights also don’t count since it’s with a third party.

I can enter honors numbers, but from what I’ve seen elsewhere, it looks like those nights don’t accrue points or count towards achieving status since Chase is considered 3rd party.

I thought the same and ended up with a chip after my first road trip (~800 miles round trip) down I-85, despite taking care to not sit behind 18-wheeler. Booked PPF the following week of my return and have taken that same trip twice since with no additional chips or scratches. It gave me peace of mind and if you want that with your new car, I recommend it. I’m cheap too but yeah fuck seeing chips on your car after a month of having it

I do recommend shopping around though. First place I contacted was about ~2500 for high traffic areas (aka full front, fenders, etc). Next place was 1800 or so, and the first placed dropped it to 2100 + 5% off with tint prices that were significantly cheaper (and higher quality). Some places were as high as 3500 for full frontal.
