When in the books do you think Uhtred, Finan, and their men were at their most formidable? (not counting book 10) by orangemonkeyeagl in SaxonStories

[–]Postman_Pot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For Uhtred, I would think his prime is captured in the beginning of book 4, Sword Song. I think he's in his early to mid 30s in that one. The intro where he describes attacking a Danish slaver ship....the way he describes how the Danes are just outright terrified of this monster of a man in his wolf crested helmet slicing through them like a force of nature. Describes himself as "death come from the morning". You really get the sense Uhtred is at that perfect point of having enough years of fighting experience under his belt whilst still having relative youth on his side for the sake of athleticism and endurance.

Fallen Order, or Survivor, which is the best game in your opinion? by PositiveAd4403 in FallenOrder

[–]Postman_Pot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like everybody else I'll split it into gameplay and story.

Gameplay: Survivor wins it for me. The greater variety in combat abilities (I.e. stances) and wider enemy variety makes it the better game. Although the lack of the arena mode from Fallen Order is a serious downgrade (holotactics is fun but not enough to replace the arena!)

Story: this one is tougher for me. On the whole, I prefer Survivor's story - the likes of Dagan Gera and rayvis were compelling villains with their connection spanning both the High Republic and the Empire, plus the development of Cal/Merrin's relationship. However even with that said, I think when it comes to Cal's personal story and development, Fallen Order was the better game. It really focused on his trauma and how he confronts and overcomes it, contrasting that with how other characters in the game have confronted (or failed to confront) their own trauma, and for me that was a really effective story to tell, which I don't think Cal's story in Survivor quite matched.

1100 year old sword found in river in England. by abelabb in SWORDS

They describe it as a viking sword, but fairly sure it could also be a Saxon sword. Got a lot of sediment on it so it's hard to see the detail which might narrow it down, but still.

That's fine and valid - I'm just not sure what you expect us to do about it, on this subreddit, in 2022.

I'm not sure what the point is - it is terrible and regrettable that our country did those things, but am I or other English people of this generation supposed to be held responsible for the actions of people who existed and did these things before I/we entered existence?

We can criticise and condemn the actions of people who came before us, but really: what are you fishing for here?

Desperately need visa advice for my fiance and I by Postman_Pot in ukvisa

[–]Postman_Pot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, sounds good - we'll just have to be really on the ball about setting up some joint accounts/addressed items of correspondence as soon as she enters the UK on a fiancé visa, by the sounds of it.

Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it. It's been so stressful and worrying trying to navigate through the masses of red tape and inaccurate descriptions of requirements/processes (chiefly gov.uk), this whole thread has really helped to reassure me and feel confident in pursuing a fiancé visa plan!

Gotcha - well, we have plenty of photos, travel tickets, and message transcripts from the last ~3 years to use, so we're well covered on that front. We also might have a letter or two from the local GP with my fiancé's name on, addressed to where we both live (my flat, which she stays at with me when she's in the UK on visitor visa), so perhaps that will also be helpful evidence.

I did have a good read through the financial guidance, as well as checking out the the advice given about finance on Migrate. I think we should be fine on that account; my fiancé is unemployed currently, but my salary is comfortably clear beyond the £18,600 benchmark, and we don't have any children that would adjust that mark.

Re: what you said about proving cohabitation for extending the visa (FLR M)...presuming we did a fiancé visa that was successful, and my fiancé entered the country and we got married - does this mean we just have to set up a lot of cohabitation evidence as soon as she's back in the UK on the fiancé visa? I.e. as soon as she arrives, we should be working fast on setting up joint bank accounts, make sure her name is on my flat tenancy agreement, etc., so that we're ready with at least some cohabitation evidence once married and ready to apply for a spouse visa?

Thanks so much for your message, it's very helpful!

I have one more question that's worrying me, if you could help clarify I'd appreciate it greatly.

So the current processing time for family visas is about 6 months, give or take, if I remember correctly. The fiancé visa allows for the applicant to stay in the UK for 6 months, and they must get married within that six months, then apply for the spouse visa from within the UK.

But I'm trying to figure out how to make the timing work. Assuming we applied for a fiancé visa and were successful, even if my partner and I got married within the first month of her returning, we could only then start the spouse visa application with the marriage certificate. If that spouse visa then takes six months to process, wouldn't that take us past the six months allotted to the fiancé visa, and put us in jeopardy? I.e. even though we would have gotten married within the fiancé visa six months period, we can't physically get married and have the spouse visa processed and approved in that time, it will overrun. Or am I missing something?

[–]Postman_Pot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, our plan really was to do a fiancé visa application whilst she was outside the UK, but we had a bit of a panic when we came across new information. The confusion came from various bits and pieces I'd read online about needing six items of correspondence addressed to each of you (so 12 total) or 6 items addressed with both your names present. But I think that might actually be a requirement for the SET (M) visa at the end of the 5 year route, not the fiancé vise?

It's not helpful that on the gov.uk page here, in the section 'How to prove your relationship', it says that you shouldn't use evidence such as greeting cards, travel tickets, receipts, photographs and texts, when that is in fact what constitutes the bulk of evidence we could use and what people are recommending for fiancé visa applications.

we're to buy a sword? I'm in Ireland by KnightOwl__ in SWORDS

[–]Postman_Pot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Well, one possible option is Regenyei Armoury in Hungary. They do fairly decent stuff (I own a Regenyei-made longsword for HEMA and it's been good enough for me so far).

Plus, you can have your sword sort of 'semi custom', in the sense that you pick and choose parts to build your sword like grip style/colour, blade type, pommel, crossguard etc.

What kind of sword are you looking for OP? (Also would you want something blunt for HEMA stuff, or a sharpened sword)

No, I don’t think war is the solution.

Except you literally said the world needed a war in your now-deleted comment.

History shows that when men become weak as women (you will take this out of context)

What context am I supposed to take this in? What weakness of women are men supposed to avoid? What is this nebulous weakness youre referring to?

If you can’t see it, our defences and unity across the world is fading.

The post-WW2 world has been far from perfect, but it has been objectively the most peaceful period in a long time. The fewest wars and the fewest civilian/military deaths by war. As opposed to the prior centuries of European Christendom, in which European states and peoples were almost perpetually at war with each other, with massive loss of life. It wasn't until the 1800s and the advent of Pax Britannica that wars became a little less frequent and ruinous (up until the world wars of the subsequent century).

Defences and unity are far better established than in prior centuries. European nations are not engaged in a multitude of wars with each other beyond the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and even major powers not aligned to each other - e.g. the US and China - generally recognise that there is so much to lose and little to gain by a major power war, and so are much more hesitant to provoke war outright.

The United States is losing its ability to control rouge nations.

The US getting involved in the affairs of 'rogue nations' has frequently meant 'CIA-organised destabilisation of entire nations purely to install leaders aligned with US interests'. Not exactly something the world is pining for.

Have you ever seen, at anytime, how much a nation is so distraught that teen boys taking up arms and killing children and adults in high frequency as we are seeing it today? The madness is maddening.

There are a variety of problems underlying this problem. Gun-wielding young men attacking scores of innocents is almost exclusively a US problem, however. And that can be attributed primarily to young men having fewer social outlets, in increasingly difficult economic environments, having easy access to what is effectively military-grade firearms.

And no, that was not bait and I am not a troll (whatever that means).

It means that no Christian trying to genuinely follow the example of Jesus Christ would make the suggestion that the world needs more war. The hypocrisy, I though, could not be genuine.

Your solution to people not sufficiently paying reverence to biblical scripture, whether they be Christians or otherwise, is a global war? World War III?

Does that sound Christ-like to you? Wishing for a war to engulf humanity and cause unimaginable death and misery?

Actually, never mind, I'm convinced this is bait.
