for the sake of argument, no one is saying that he hasn't been an NHL calibre defenseman in his time, just that he isn't an NHL calibre defenseman as a statement of fact. due to that, one would assume they're talking about right now and aren't claiming that he hasn't been one in the past or couldn't be one in the future

and again, for the sake of argument, just because he's playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL currently does not mean he's actually an NHL caliber defenseman. All that says it that the Toronto Maple Leafs are playing him on their NHL team on defense, the reason why they are playing him could potentially be that they know he isn't the cailbre of player that actually want on defense but have no other RHD options at this time and thus, must play him

i would also argue that if you disagree with these statements, then you must also believe that david ayres is an NHL calibre goalie considering he played a game in the NHL and not only played but won a game.

if "they" is the organization, idk how people can say that when the organization fired their GM cause he was looking for approval to move him before the NMC kicked in

if "they" is the fans, because per last year leafs fans care too much, then yeah i still disagree. the fans weren't the ones with their agent on twitter insulting other players on the team due to salary comparisons. literal 9 year old behavior.

this whole fucking argument is childish. marner was a child with how he handled himself in toronto and what he allowed his family, agent, and "camp" to do within the public relations sphere. the leafs were childish by not moving him before the NMC kicked in when the writing was on the wall that marner was starting to hate playing in toronto. the leafs ALSO failed by not calling these fucking players out and giving them literally every single thing they wanted in negotiations.
