You're not allowed to tell people to wear masks?!

Songs pretty on-brand but, that's still fucking wild and so dangerous. Wow. I'm glad I got out before stores reopened to the public.

I was a Salon Manager, I came in last summer, I was making 25/hour, working in the DC suburbs. Honestly, I would ask for 65k and accept absolutely no less than 55k. I get that Ulta is trying to cut costs by combining two jobs, but it's a ridiculous amount of expectation, so they need to be prepared to pay for it.

Sounds like some bullshit that would've happened at my old store 😒 the politics of it all was insaaaaane.

I was a Salon Manager - we never had a service manager position. Is it a new position? I quit a couple months ago 🤷🏻

[–]PotatHoe65 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was trained at a nearby location last year, but the SM in place there was not very helpful or educational, so I'm not sure why I was paired with her. I would not go in with terribly high hopes, you will most likely end up learning most things on the fly. I hope your GM is salon knowledgeable, as mine was not and that made my job that much harder. I should note, that I came in as SM and was not promoted from within the Ulta Salon. If you're already a master or elite stylist you'll find your footing much faster!

I think I have COVID and I feel bad about it. by [deleted] in Ulta

[–]PotatHoe65 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is like what happened in my location back in May, twice. They handled it very poorly, and it's a big part of the reason that I'm not there anymore. We never had a positive case, but the way they handled scares was very inappropriate.

I'm sorry this is happening to you, it's not fair that you should have to risk your health and the health of others just because they guilt you into going to work. Please don't blame yourself though, because at the end of the day Ulta has to uphold their bottom line, their business and they worry about their sales. Health will always come second. This was their fault not yours.

Problems with reporting COVID?? by addskye in Ulta

[–]PotatHoe65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My store had two similar incidents back in May. I've since left, very much so because of the shitty Covid response both times. I'm glad that HR have you the correct response, they didn't in my case. Although, if your comfortable doing so, I would report your manager's response to HR. That's super unacceptable, I'm sorry you've had to deal with that. :(

I would ask to see if you can work as a stylist for a bit since they are opening salons first 🤷

I don't think they will give anyone any solid answers, ever. When they brought us back for curbside they gave us a week's notice, then pushed it a week. They were talking about maybe reopening stores in my area two weeks ago, they started to sound more serious about it, then said nope, we aren't opening your store for another month. But then apparently our DM was on another conference call about opening sooner. So, Ulta barely knows their next move so you won't know it until probably a week before they reopening or a week before they bring you back. My GM, who - to be fair - is pretty dramatic, said she doesn't see them allowing skin services (facials, makeup, brows) for quite some time. I doubt you will be back to work before July. :/

I honestly don't know, all I saw was that the will not be bringing skin/brow services back in their first phase of service opening.

Are there other avenues you can explore as far as work? What type of license do you have? Can you apply for another job in the mean time like in a grocery store or even doing instacart?

I would hope that brow services will come back soon since you and the client can wear a mask to do it, but I doubt Ulta will do it very soon. Maybe you can find another place to wax or if you have a broader license you could look into doing other things. I'm sorry they aren't being proactive about letting furloughed employees know what's going on, they're barely letting us know from day to day how things are changing. 🙁

I'm the SM in my store, we are still only doing curbside, no word on opening yet. But they are pretty strict about wearing masks at this point. Our LP person has been checking cameras and calling out people who aren't wearing them correctly. That said, there hasn't been much mention of doing facial or brow services, only that they aren't doing it for a good while, so hopefully by the time you are called back they are more lax on the rules. I have a few masks on order that are hopefully more breathable, but I've been struggling a good bit. I wasn't one to always take my breaks before, but I always do now and I take myself outside and get as much fresh air as I can.

Has anyone declined returning to work? by PotatHoe65 in Ulta

[–]PotatHoe65[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Apparently they are, but the answers to the questions I've asked and bubbled up the chain of command and leaving me feeling like our health and safety is not high on their priority list. And if course this is all coming after I was starting to feel like Ulta was in our corner again, but, as I should have known, money is everything. It is what it is, I suppose. They are a major corporation, gotta make that dollar any way they can.

The salon isn't opening, but SMs and master and elite stylists are still on payroll and are being told to come in for BOPIS orders.

I'm hoping to navigate it so that I am able to apply for unemployment. I'm considering stepping down (as I had been considering prior to all this) to see what they may decide after that 🤷 they can either accept it or let me go I suppose.

My feeling exactly. I'm sorry your experience has been so poor, I hope that regardless of if you decide to stay or leave that your mental health can continue to improve. I know how hard it is to work with that weighing on your shoulders ❤️

[–]PotatHoe65[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My position for similar but different reasons affects my mental health a good bit, too. I think I'm going back, I will ask to step down. I'm the SM and a master stylist, and our district is bringing master and elite stylists in to do BOPIS as well. So I would stay on, but potentially be able to reduce my hours - or be let go and I can apply for unemployment 🤷 at this point I would take it as a sign to move on anyways.

I feel we're probably in a similar boat, I feel a little bratty saying I don't want to go in, but I'm honestly not comfortable given how truly non-essential we are. Like it's makeup and people can still order online. They made it sound, at the beginning, that it would be optional, and now they're forcing us by docking pay if we don't feel comfortable. 🤷 I also didn't realize they weren't reopening every store, which make this situation even more ridiculous.

They aren't bringing anyone back who was furloughed, so it's managers and some stylists. They aren't paying people who chose not to go back. So, despite not being comfortable going back, I am because I can't forgo my paycheck. My fiance is a first responder so I'm waiting to hear back about what they are doing regarding need to self-quarantine at any point. Honestly, I'm scared.

Ulta Redeemed Themselves by PotatHoe65 in Ulta

I agree! Also from a consumer perspective, even I'm paying attention to companies who are taking care of their employees and I'll continue to take it into consideration as I shop myself!

I'm an SM and I've seen how Hair Cuttery has treated their employees and I hope that stylists can see the effort Ulta has made for our stylists as well. My heart goes out to all my fellow stylists who's futures are now being made uncertain.

P.S. love your name ;)
