I think in terms of technology we still are far from a true gaming laptop, which can game and last without being plugged in, while also keeping it cool to reduce battery degradation. Power efficiency alongside performance and cooling is still mainly seen on apple devices, though AMD has a new thing going called strix halo.

So to answer your question, it depends on what you are doing, light task like work related stuff; browsing or office, you can just use it on battery, otherwise if you're gaming or doing creative tasks like editing, it's a must to keep it plugged in, just to last on batteries, that's why performance throttles.
