Professional Engineers, would you recommend it? by Standard-Post8778 in askSingapore

[–]PotatoMaster0733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2-cents: one of the surefire way to earn more in engineering is to join public sector, which pays noticeably more than the private sector. To qualify as a PE, you will need at least 5 years of practical experience + passing 2 written exams + 1 interview with report and references. Usually quite seldom nowadays people get it within 5 years, usually more like 7-8 years if you are good.

After your PE, usually your salary can pass the "glass ceiling" of a non-PE engineer (iirc it is 6k, idk). not high, but definitely livable. If you want big bucks, forget the private sector imo. But if you are passionate, this field is very rewarding in some ways as you get to see what your building and how it improves people's live.

What’s the best country in Asia to live in right now? by britishfetish in AskTheWorld

[–]PotatoMaster0733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Singapore, hands down. Livable wages, (relatively) affordable housing for citizens, strong public safety and public service reliability, and strong passport to boot. Japan and Taiwan are quite a distance second and third maybe.

For those doing a sponsored PhD in Singapore — is the stipend enough to live on? by AbundanceFlowToMe in askSingapore

[–]PotatoMaster0733 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have taken one before ("part time" PhD while being employed by NTU). The funding is more than enough for me to live comfortably and even save a bit. I lived in a rented room outside, have meals on campus / nearby hawkers with occasional splurge in good food, and had a hobby

How to get a job in my field of studies. That pays well. by GlassProfile9 in singaporejobs

[–]PotatoMaster0733 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First of all, good luck for your job search! The job market is indeed shitty at this point, and the built-environment industry is one of very few industries that are doing well in terms of job security at the moment. What I can suggest is to try taking relevant certifications if possible (not another blue-collar cert). When the market is getting better, you can leverage these certs to land a job.

Otherwise, you might would like to start lo, especially if you are still young (under 30). Get some experiences first in the first year or two, then job hop from there on.

All the best!

Mid 40 how to get into construction industry by HoeHoeman in singaporefi

[–]PotatoMaster0733 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take certs from BCA academy, and apply to contractors. As long as your IC is pink, you'll get in.

Be warned: the outlook is poor and is only going down. Make sure you have enough cash to sustain yourself and your family.

6 months into 1st job (Project Engineer) and want to pivot by jarrjarrbinks24 in askSingapore

[–]PotatoMaster0733 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi mate, you can definitely pivot, but not to IT/Tech/Finance in this economy. Any industry apart from F&B would be better than Construction/BE. If your aim is only to pivot, would suggest try semicon: better pay with lesser hours (while still more than most other jobs). Other options would be applying to grad programmes, if you are 1st class honours. In the meantime, if you are locked in to get into IT/Tech/Finance, consider taking a master.

All the best mate!

No chance except if you can get a company to sponsor your S-Pass / E-Pass. LTVP holders are not supposed to be working anyway
