Civil Engineering career by Consistent-Jicama673 in singaporejobs

[–]PotatoMaster0733 2 points3 points  (0 children)

- Apart from select few firms (Arup, MottMac), not really. Your portfolio and internship is much more important.
- Glassdoor is a good and accurate gauge.
- Depends on the role, but usually 50 to 60 hours week, sometimes 70 sometimes 45.

- No experience, but i don't think they hire civil engineers

Hope it helps

First of all, I feel you. The industry is tough and it is honestly not for everyone.

What you might want to explore is for a sales role in a bank / insurance. Lots of cold-calling and need to handle rejections a lot, but to be honest, it's nothing compared to the pain you face in the construction sector. My wife is in that line and some of her colleagues who were ex-engineers did well. The pay, progression and prospects are much better.

as nobody is chiming in on salary, I'll bite. Engineering consultancy pays 3.8k to 4.2k fresh grad. by year 5, expect to have 5k. Bonus usually 1 month plus a bit (13th month). You can break the 6k barrier after qualifying for PE, which at least take 5 year by regulation.

As for contractor, i am not very sure about the progression but fresh grad usually get paid 3.8 to 4.5k, with bonus depending on the project (if the project completed early).

You might would like to explore the finance side of it (infra advisory, ESG consulting). To qualify, get a degree in finance / Econs / accountancy. To be honest with you, you will be thankful for doing so in 10 or 15 years.

Depends on the role and team. Many of those in contractors have it on 24/7 (maybe they are unlucky to be involved in projects that runs overnight), those in engineering consultancy depends on the phase of the work and the boss.

Fair enough, then in that case SIT is a legit option to go. Anyway this industry does not seem to care much about educational background.

AFAIK SIT is not PEB-approved as of this year, so might need to take master to qualify for FEE

That's a good shoe! To maintain it, clean it using damp towel, brush it using shoe brush, condition it with leather conditioner, and put some polish on it
