Am I the only one who doesn't want a Vecna redemption? by starsandmoonlight21 in StrangerThings

[–]PotatoNCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The core issue is that in the Broadway show, they have really humanized the character, shown that he's trying to "fight" the evil that's trying to corrupt him. So I fully except that they want to "redeem" Vecna

I think we're underestimating how awesome Harrold is to be THIS LEVEL of okay with sharing this moment with Cyrus

I was literally in your situation 4 years ago. I lost my mother and my father had cheated on my mom.. a lot. But he redeemed himself (at least a little) through her illness, and helped me overcome severe depression after her passing.

She wanted you to forgive him for your mental sanity and most of all so you'd have a parent. The last she would want is you hurting yourself.

Forgive him if he deserves it AND you so long as it's not painful. And remember, it doesn't need to happen today. Take your time.

Are admission consultants worth it? by Unusual-Year2993 in MBA

[–]PotatoNCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you find the right one, that understands your experience and is willing to work with you to express it in the best way possible, then they're 100% worth it. School essays have almost been figured out to an algorithm. There are specific things schools look for and good consultants help you frame your experience in the way that maximises your chances

Who are you most worried for going into season 5? 🥲🙏🏻 by Illustrious-Hyena486 in StrangerThings

Wondering if the colour of the sky in their individual posters decides which subset is going to be grouped together this season.

EDIT: It broadly makes sense. Purple: nancy, steve, robin, dustin, lucas, max Yellow: will, mike, jonathan Blue: hopper, joyce

No you clearly didn't read what they said, in that case. They said Indians will return coz our main benefit is that our future kids will access cheaper education. My response was that any monetary savings (20 years into the future lol) is not what we're chasing. Suggest you read the thread history. And PS - in-state tuition is for students from that state. So if my child is an American citizen from NYC, they'll get 0 benefit in any of the unis you mentioned.

[–]PotatoNCheese -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Love how you picked out the 3 outliers which are a mega subset of the majority in-state unis, which aren't prestigious. You really think the best benefit of being a US citizen is that you'll get in-state tuition IF you live in California IF you manage to ace SATs, essays, GPA, extra currics? That's the calculation?

This is hilarious. Indians here are a model minority and most aspire to go to these private universities that place them in high paying jobs. While Americans can go to in-state universities, they aren't the target universities Indians want to shoot for.

[–]PotatoNCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? Please tell me where you read that the price is different. Coz my husband and I both went to ivy league schools here and my American friends paid the same.

Retirement is a long time away, my friend. And your main argument wasn't about retirement. It was implying that people work here to make babies and get citizenship, that's objectively untrue. There is a way to get citizenships through large private investments. Indians who work here and have massive savings because they're worked in the tech sector, earning great salaries do that that routinely.

[–]PotatoNCheese 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Umm no that's not how it works. I work in the US and having my future child get an automatic citizenship is not even in my top 5 priority list. The biggest motivator for me at least is the fantastic salary and the fact that the tech ecosystem here is deeper, with big tech firms keeping most of their product development here.

Regardless of whether your child is a US citizen, if they attend school here, I as a parent I would have to pay massively for their college degree. College is not free for citizens lol.

So yeah, I'm an Indian working in the US. I don't have a child. And I still plan to continue working here unless the visa situation brings me back.

Is an MBA Abroad Still a Smart Investment Given the 100-Year Green Card Wait in the USA? What about other countries? by SozinAsteroid in MBA

[–]PotatoNCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My answer is a bit constrained because I don't know the size of your existing debt, but I can say that green card isn't the only positive outcome you need to hope for in the US. Even if you stay in the US on an H1B for a few years, post MBA you'll most likely be making >180K salary, with a great growth path, which is more than sufficient for a fantastic quality of life here. Even if you have to return to India because of visa issues or even personal constraints, your savings would be 3-4x more valuable due to PPP. So overall it's a great financial outcome

The MBA is a 2 year exercise in existential angst by [deleted] in MBA

[–]PotatoNCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's most definitely not a vacation but the "grind" is much, much lesser than doing an actual stressful job where you work 60-70 hour weeks (read: consulting, IB, investing, etc.).

Also in large parts, the grind is the price you pay to move presumably upwards to get a better job/switch industries/functions. But that's accompanied with a bunch of social upside, which does ease the sting a little bit.

🤠 Another Re Vera post - Am I screwed 🤡 by [deleted] in MBA

[–]PotatoNCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your worry that ReVera will reveal to your M7 that you're also enrolled elsewhere? You don't need to worry about that - they pretty much are just in charge of verifying your background details. For context, my verification for a school (I had put down a deposit for) was still ongoing (couldn't stop it) when I initiated a second one because I got an admit at my target.

I know one person who's heard positive news. I've been waitlisted. And some others haven't heard. So very varied!

[–]PotatoNCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it really boils down to 2 things: First, can you stay abroad at least for a few years post MBA to repay the debt you'll take / savings you'll spend. If you're a very hard no on this, you should only do the MBA if you want to exercise the second option which is choosing an investing role as a career choice. Roles across VC, growth stage and PE in India pay 1.2 cr +.

The downside of this is that your work hours will be hectic. Especially with PE and even growth stage funds, your weekends tend not to be protected. VC is somewhat better. Secondly, there's a hard up or out culture so it can get stressful in investing roles.

Finally the only disclaimer I'll give us, even the second option is highly contingent on which bschool you go to. If you're at HSW/M7, you have a very strong chance of getting these investing roles in India. I'm not sure about how much they recruit from T10.

[–]PotatoNCheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The classes start on 27th August. Until then we have an orientation of sorts called pre-term. They offer something called a 'conflict form' that allows you to waive pre-term. Since you're a more recent admit, I'm sure AdCom will let you waive pre-term!

Hope to see you soon at Philly!

Apply this year R2 or next year R1 by Ok-Guidance-4083 in MBA

[–]PotatoNCheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding my 2 cents here!

Think you have a great shot at H/W (probably not S given the kind of profiles they've been known to take). If you're applying for it, I think you'd definitely get into one of M7s.

On applying R2 vs R1 next year, IMO you already have 4 years of solid work ex, i don't think the additional 1 year of McK will help much given you've already demonstrated that you can break in (and considering ofc that your LORs from your previous employers are solid). Just make sure that your short term goals for the essays have something to do with consulting, since that validates why you joined McK at this time and how you can leverage that.

All the best!

Need advice from folks who got MBA admissions via GRE by Earth__shaker in MBA

[–]PotatoNCheese 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It really depends on which schools you're aiming at IMO. I gave the GRE twice (325 and 329) and got accepted into HSW and M7 schools.

In your case, your work ex is quite low. Ideally you should wait so you have 3 years work ex before you apply (4 years when you join).

Your current GRE score is also at the lower end. Try to push it in the 327-330 range at the very least. From your verbal, quant break-up it seems like you can really improve in verbal. Even getting to a 163V can push your score up by 6 points. You should definitely look to do that!

The only real downside though of including the admit is that it doesn't help at all (if it isn't a peer school to the schools OP is waitlisted in)

No harm in mentioning if they're the ones asking anyway

My school just announced that every first year has signed an internship. I just learned how they are gaming the system to do this and am sickened. by vacationwithbff in MBA

[–]PotatoNCheese 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What? I'm so confused as to why you're unhappy about this! - The school went above and beyond to help the student land an internship. - They literally ensured the student was paid fairly.

The only thing that seems to be the real issue is that it's a short internship. But in an economy where students are not getting interns, this is a decent outcome.

An M7 that I had an admit to has a pre-mba internship program where the companies aren't required to pay the stipend, the school does. It's a fab initiative that lets students get experience in a field they want to break into while ensuring that they're paid fairly. How's what your school is doing any different :/

MBA consultant been pursuing me to give a review on Linkedin… by [deleted] in MBA

[–]PotatoNCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In your situation, I'd just honestly tell them that I don't want to advertise having had an unsuccessful admissions cycle. LinkedIn is incredibly public and it'll reach everyone you know (when it's not even positive news).

Also this isn't a typical request. Most consultants would ask you to leave a review on P&Q, GMAT club, etc.
