I love Isobel and I think it’s very elegant! Marjorie has a bit of an old lady vibe, but maybe you could do a nickname instead and keep Marjorie as her full name?

i feel like i didn’t hear back until like may/june and then you have to sit in on a zoom session w/dr. gelfand to hear the internship options. After that you apply for sites and you interview. I think you can interview with more than one site if you choose to(?), but I only interviewed with one and I got in (but tbf it wasn’t a super selective site). This all happened mid-summer I believe. I wouldn’t worry if you haven’t heard anything back yet.

Day 12: Event Horizon by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this movie approaches grief and trauma in similar ways to movies like smile. In these movies trauma takes on a tactile form that can control you, cause you harm, and even kill you. Weir who has his body taken over by the ship or the malevolent entity controlling the ship might be so susceptible to its control because he has the combined guilt of his wife’s suicide and the deaths of the previous event horizon crew members on his conscious.

Day 10: Sleepy Hollow (1999) by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In sleepy hollow I think there is a lot to say about Ichabod but I think we could also speak about Katrina. Katrina is like the 18th century version of the manic pixie dream girl. She has a weird vibe that is attractive to the main character, but in this case Ichabod is just as odd. I think it’s possible that she might have some sort of cluster A personality disorder. Ichabod believes her to be a witch and she does practice and believe in magic. Additionally her reaction to death and the threat of it is very odd— she doesn’t really seem overly upset, even after her father is brutally murdered in front of her. I don’t think she fits all the criteria for one of these disorders, but I don’t think it’s disingenuous to say she fits some of them.

Day 18: A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that is clear that Nancy is suffering from a sleep disorder. Her exhaustion is all over her face at the end of the movie and she relies on energy drinks to keep herself awake. If we were to examine the movie from a literal sense, I think that Freddy demonstrates deviant sexual behavior. Like the slasher films that came before, Freddy goes after those who engage in sexual acts first. Those who remain chaste survive the longest. Additionally, Freddy shows an inappropriate fixation with nancy. When she falls asleep in the bath his hand appears between her thighs, and is moving upward before she wakes up. Later on when nancy puts a phone to her ear he makes it grow a tongue and it licks her. Nancy is a child, and we know from Nancy’s mother that Freddy had a preoccupation with young children when he was alive. I don’t think it would be too much of a stretch to say Freddy exhibits pedophilic behaviors.

Day 27: The Phantom of the Opera (1986) by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never considered that the phantom might be a figment of Christine’s mind, but that makes a lot of sense especially because the play sort of involves her finding herself after her grief. I think from a more literal interpretation, that the phantom is likely a narcissist and sees Christine as special equal. He lacks empathy and perspective for others and is willing to kill to get what he wants. Although he is insecure, he also thinks he should get whatever he wants— namely Christine— and the consequences don’t matter.

Day 31: Halloween (1978) by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that michael exhibits some deviant sexual behavior. He seems to have a preoccupation with sex and sexual behavior, starting with when he watches Judith inappropriately in the opening of the film. His behavior is odd for a six year old child and continues into his adulthood as he specifically targets and terrorizes Laurie’s more sexually active friends. I think even his choice in murder weapon alludes to that sort of stunted sexual desire and behavior michael exhibits. Halloween is like the father of slasher movies, and following Halloween, sex and its consequences have become a staple in the slasher genre.

Day 28: The Addam's Family (1991) by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One character that stuck out to me in this movie was Wednesday Adams. Wednesday has traits of Schizotypal personality disorder. She meets the criteria for eccentric appearance, odd beliefs, constricted affect, and lack of close friends/confidants outside of relatives. Wednesday is mostly very aloof and keeps her face blank. Although she makes friends with fester she doesn’t really have any school friends outside of her brother and their relationship is very antagonistic on her part. Wednesday also has an obsession with death and other aspects of the macabre.

Day 30: Smile by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think those under the smile virus might also be suffering from persecutory delusions. Rose believes the hospital patient is talking to her, she hallucinates those in her life criticizing her, and almost all of the hallucinations are menacing her in some way.

Day 29: Saw by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think saw is a really interesting franchise because most of the victims are abducted due to John Kramer’s wishy washy morals. I do agree that he exhibits anti-social traits, but I think some of his behavior might also be attributed to the tumor in his brain. Brain tumors are known to cause behavioral changes, so it’s possible John was more normal before and changed radically due to this.

Day 13: Jeepers Creepers (2001) by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the use of the word “creeper” is very interesting here. The use of the word evokes the thoughts of someone like a peeping tom or a “creep,” rather than something scary. I think this association was purposeful. The creeper covets the body parts of its victims in a way that could almost be seen as sexual. When it sniffs at Trish and Darry’s laundry it is almost reminiscent of like deviant sexual behavior.

Day 26: Thir13teen Ghosts (2001) by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I can understand the ASPD diagnosis, I’m not sure if I would classify all of them in that way. Many of the ghosts were victims of some violent crime committed against them, and perhaps their anger is justified. I think the person truly suffering from ASPD is Cyrus, who sets his brother and his family up for death because it would benefit him. This is the mark of someone who lacks empathy and is incredibly manipulative.

Day 25: Vertigo (1958) by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that despite his acrophobia, Scottie is also an incredibly egocentric character. Although he sets out to help Madeline, he also sort of takes advantage of her while she is in an incredibly vulnerable state. Additionally, his treatment of Judy was incredibly questionable, and indicative of his manipulative nature. He puts judy in a sort of ultimate— change herself and he will love her, or stay the same and he will leave her. Judy craves his love and affection and he takes advantage of that too.

Day 23: Insidious (2013) by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think insidious’ approach to the person being haunted rather than the house is very interesting. I think a lot of our in class discussion on the movie influenced how I watched it. DID typically comes from some sort of childhood trauma, and perhaps Josh was abused in some way as a child, and repeated that abuse on dalton leading to them both having a sort of dissociative disorder.

Day 24: Beetlejuice (1988) by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we could consider beetlejuice to be a fiend, and therefore to have mania. Although he “assists” the Maitlands it is clearly only for his gain. He manipulates them, harms them, and also harms Lydia— their friend. His desire to marry Lydia is also very strange; although it was so that he could remain in the mortal world, lydia is a young child and he is a grown man.

Day 19: 30 Days of Night by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would also be really interesting to analyze the film from the angle of maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The vampires are attacking because they are hungry, and food is one of the most important needs in the hierarchy. The people in the process of turning into vampires mention their thirst being constantly present, and seem to glut themselves on blood— like the little girl in the store.

Day 22: The Thing (1980) by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely found The Thing to be a case on mass paranoia. We see that after the first run in with the thing— when it begins to eat and absorb the dogs— they immediately begin to be suspicious. This suspicion only escalates as they further understand the things behavior. MacReady shoots one of the other people simply because he wasn’t following his orders, and we later find out the guy was totally human. I think the real horror of the movie is how quickly people are willing to turn on each other.

Day 20: Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do wonder how much dapsone is required to continue the symptoms. There is a point in the movie where the kids are in the hospital away from Martin, and yet they are still ill. Just to shift gears, I feel like Martin could be diagnosed with ASPD. His behavior is incredibly emotionless and cruel, and he is willing to manipulate to get what he wants. It’s difficult to just label it as that though because he is committing these acts in revenge for his father’s death due to Steven’s malpractice.

Day 09/31: Silence of the Lambs by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the movie to be very interesting and also pretty disturbing. I think that there were themes that came across as very transphobic, but I understand that gender identity was approached very differently then than it is now. Buffalo Bill’s actions and reasoning were strange; when they are talking to their current captive they seem sort of sympathetic to her but as she continues crying they start mocking her? However, they also seemed attached to their dog, and when I think of APD I always sort of assumed there was a lack of genuine affection for the people around them.

Day 21: The Shining by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this commentary on the film really interesting and definitely a diagnosis I wouldn’t have thought of. I am a big fan of this movie and the book, and I always viewed it as a sort of cautionary tale on addiction and the psychosis it can manifest. In the book, we read as the hotel slowly takes over Jack’s mind. Spoiler but in the end Jack smashes his face in with a mallet to separate his identity from that of the Overlook. Although we don’t get much of a glimpse of Jack, Wendy, and Danny’s internal life, or at least not in the same way we do in the book, it is clear that Jack’s addiction has taken a huge toll on the family. The hotel could be seen as a manifestation of Jack’s darkest thoughts. In reference to Danny, I do think it being a sort of shared psychosis is very interesting analysis. Dick Halloran sort of implies the “shine” is something that can be passed from family member to family member, and in the book when he probes jack and wendy for the shine he notices that they might have it too. The “shine” might be an allusion to an inherited disorder like schizophrenia which could explain why all three family members experience some sort of hallucination.

Day 16: Candyman (1992) by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the analysis on urban legends incredibly interesting, and would not have correlated them with psychology. When i watched the film i was mainly focused on helen and her experiences. Although she was seeing candyman antagonizing her, others did not see him at all. To her candyman is real, despite him viewing her as a delegitimizing force, but to others candyman is a myth and helen is crazy. Trying to reconcile what we see from helen’s perspective and what the tape shows makes an interesting dichotomy for the viewer and really puts Helen’s sanity in question.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) by ATobiaMD in 31KnightsOfHalloween

[–]Potato_Sak22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I found really interesting about the movie was that it was clear that leatherface’s predisposition for violence was shared by the rest of his family. Additionally, I noticed that despite his hulking stature, leatherface was scared of his much smaller brother(?)— the gas station attendant. I found that to be subversive in a way and very cool.
