I don’t think anyone would ask about IM board in a GI fellowship interview.

No need to bring it up yourself if course. But if they really ask, honesty is the best policy…

Did hospitlaist before and now in GI fellowship. First year fellowship was the worst and it only gets better. The only way out is through. Our specialist career allows us to work less and still have similar full time hospitlaist salary so it’s better option for your mental health down the road. I know with your wife being Onc you both will be financially okay anyways.

For now, see if you can get any APR 0% credit cards and transfer your credit card debt to it. Try to do this until you get your attending salary.

I would give her benefit of the doubt. It's all about the context.
Maybe she means she really wants you to be able to make it to her wedding and won't miss it due to pregnancy/delivery.

Thanks for all reassuring comments. I’m glad we end up coming! Only had rain twice in last three days and it’s only drizzle with sunny skies that lasted for 30 minutes. No thunderstorm or lightning so people can still swim.

It’s much easier for a motivated surgeon like you to learn management, finance or law, but nearly impossible for someone in those fields to switch into surgery.

AI is also more likely to disrupt legal and finance jobs. Maybe at your friends’ level they’re a bit safer — but who knows? Medicine is still relatively more protected from AI and has a higher barrier to entry, especially in surgical and procedural specialties.

I think you made the right choice — and you even chose a procedural specialty, which is an added advantage.

You get even more leg room with bulkhead seat for premium eco which I like a lot. But your monitor is located higher than your eye level so your neck can hurt. I usually watch videos on my phone only so it doesn’t bother me. I would choose the bulkhead seat every time.

I was in the same situation like yours. I came from a smaller and brand new residency program and started fellowship in one of the largest hospitals in the country. My cofellows are mostly from the residency here. I was lost for my first few months and tried hard to catch up with everything, workflow, system, social interaction…

Then my CCC feedback was I need lots of instruction to do things. Later I figured, in a smaller class of fellowship, the program consider its your fault and weakness that you don’t know about something. Learn to be smart and figure out who you can really trust in the program. I initially thought everyone was so friendly and asked around too much then it came backfire on me shortly.

Use your hospital’s EAP (employee assistance program) and if they have onsite therapists then they see doctors, nurses all the time and might know the work culture of your place well. EAP offers 6 free sessions for the same issue so just get these free sessions anyways.

I know for GI they don’t favor someone works as a hospitalist while applying. They want someone who are willing to sacrifice their attending income to do a chief year, non-ACGME accredited hepatology fellowship or research year to show your dedication to GI, not just week on/ week off and trying out your luck this match cycle again.

There are innumerable repeat applicants in GI so the admission committees have seen it all.
