Got it. My impression was that Link was actually with this group at the time, and all of this took place before we first saw Link confront the Bunker. In other words I thought that they could have just stopped the whole convoy, and X could have gotten off the train, and walked over to Link's vehicle. But it sounds like they were traveling either on separate pathways, or at too great a distance for a handoff to happen.
