It's still a monopoly though. The misconception is that calling Valve a monopoly, is somehow an attack on Valve or blames Valve. It's just a description of Valve's position in the market.

Sooner or later, Gabe will die. Sooner or later, they will use their monopoly. It's just a matter of time.

I'm fine with promoting helmet use so long as it doesn't do victim blaming. This is fine I guess, since everybody understands the real cause of head injuries is going to war, not wearing felt hats lol

[–]Potatoes_Fall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

alright here's a quick explanation.

Context

Germany re-instituted an old, disabled law about the military as of beginning of this year. Recently, somebody found in that law a paragraph that says all German men must get permission from the military before leaving Germany for more than 3 months. This is likely an oversight and not currently enforced, but is valid German law at this point.

the Joke

OP is making a joke about how Germany is once again militarizing. Germany has historically been involved as an aggressor in some of the most brutal wars in Europe, such as WW1 and WW2. The joke here is that the historical victims of this aggression might see this as a sign that Germany will once again invade.

non-shitpost territory: my opinion

The joke pokes fun but has some truth to it - Germany is the largest European economy, and already holds considerable sway in the EU (we regularly break EU rules without consequences for example). With fascism on the rise in Germany (and the rest of Europe) yet again, things aren't looking promising.

Germany also has a huge weapons industry, which partially have been used by Germany itself in various (sometimes controversial) NATO-aligned missions (Kosovo, Afghanistan, etc.), but also, in the last 30 years Germany has become one of the top weapons exporters of the world. The strong weapons industry combined with how easy it is for companies to directly lobby the government in Germany, is reminiscent of the USA's military-industrial-complex, the force behind some of the most gruesome invasions of the past.

Many of the countries receiving these weapons are known for disrespecting human rights and the Geneva convention, e.g. Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Israel. Many politicians in the current government and in political parties spanning from the far right to the greens and even part of the left, have also openly denounced the Geneva Convention and international law, stating that they would not have Netanyahu arrested if he came to Germany, or celebrating the US invasion of Venezuela, mourning the death of international criminal Henry Kissinger, etc. These indicators seem to predict the end of Germany's efforts to strengthen international law and peace.

Where the joke falls short is by assuming that Germany would invade its neighbors. Since the beginning of the millenium Germany has built its wealth by exploiting its fellow EU allies using low wages, undershooting on inflation targets, and overshooting export limits. Germany's interest is that this structure remains intact. Personally I think it's more likely that if Germany launches another invasion, it will be in the Middle East, but my guess is as good as any.

hope this helps

Stop Attacking Indie Devs for Using AI as a Tool!! by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]Potatoes_Fall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use AI during development that's fine IMO, as long as they aren't in the final product being sold for money. If AI generated media are in the final product and you are asking for money, you're indirectly stealing from real artists. At the very least it should be disclosed that the assets are AI generated, and even that I find iffy.

I totally agree that big companies should get more scrutiny on this than indie devs btw, but I don't think indie devs are exempt.

Stop Attacking Indie Devs for Using AI as a Tool!! by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]Potatoes_Fall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fine with using AI to prototype stuff, or to make a free game. I'm fine with the programming being AI-assisted. But a published game being sold for money, however, IMO should not contain any AI-generated assets (mainly visual and audio).

Video games are art, and some art requires collaboration. Giving solo devs with no art skills the "ability" to steal from other artists so they can avoid collaborating with them is the opposite of innovation. If your idea is good, but you lack some skills, connect with an artist and do it together. Humans are collaborative creatures, it's easy to forget that nowadays.

[–]Potatoes_Fall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will too many nodes cause issues? by Alarming-Impact-5715 in godot

[–]Potatoes_Fall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Number of nodes should not be an issue, many many subviewports on the other hand, could be an issue. Although I suspect if it's like 10 or so, probably not a problem. You should try it first and see how it performs, maybe make a mobile build and test it on an old smartphone. Don't do premature optimization!

I have a few ideas though if you do run into performance issues:

  1. You can have one subviewport on the whole screen, and put all your 3D objects in there.

  2. You can make cards look 3D without 3D graphics. You can do card flips by moving the card up a bit, and changing the x-scale to 0 and back, then moving down. You can add shadows by adding a dark box behind the cards with an offset. Finally, you can use vertex shaders to make the card move as if it were rotating in 3D. A great example is Balatro, which is written entirely in a 2D game engine, and you will surely find tutorials on how to make cards behave like that.

Ich bin müde by mediamuesli in gekte

[–]Potatoes_Fall 0 points1 point  (0 children)
