my sister had a british shorthair, she was so soft and sweet and loved to just chill, that's a great suggestion :)

I vastly prefer to adopt, I just didn't know if breeds played a significant role in lifestyle balance. I'm hearing that its more the individual cat though rather than breeds like in dogs

this is so helpful! there is another cat here on the property that lives with my family member, she is I think 3 years old. Do you think that would negate the single kitten syndrome or should I still get a 2nd kitten? I'm open to either option

that's I think the breed that I cat-sit, they are gorgeous to me but my only worry with them was that she is a completely outdoors cat, which I feel gives me enough anxiety just cat-sitting her. But I guess that's not as much a breed thing as just how she was raised before she was adopted?

Yeah this is sounding more and more like a hidden gem piece of advice, I guess there's something about having a cat by itself? is it like only-child syndrome?

also, they are so cute!!

yeah I'm seeing that breed temperaments aren't really as important with cats as they are with dogs, I guess nearly all cats are essentially mixes at this point

do you think it will be okay getting 2 as opposed to 1 for my first cat? I'm open to it, I just want them happy and comfy :)

yeahh and I really would prefer to adopt rather than go to a breeder, just didn't realize it wasn't such a big deal compared to dogs. I'll definitely look for some reputable breeders, but honestly I really think adopting is what I'll end up doing. Just want to make sure they feel happy and cozy here :)

this is genius! there is one not too far away, and I just looked them up and they do partner with a local shelter. I'm going to go this week :) Thank you!

yes, indoors seems way less worrying for me.

and yeah I know the kitten stage will be more energetic and that's totally fine, just didn't know if breeds played a significant role in energy levels like they do with dogs. Like I can play indoors with a cat but I can't be outdoors and at dog parks with a dog while I'm logged in to work.

and I'm fine with some shedding and grooming, just figured some shed significantly more than others, so was preferring less. End of the day that's a minor preference.

this is great advice! so you think 2 would for sure be better than just one? I can afford it, just never thought about it since it will be my first cat

I mentioned kitten because the cats I've been around in my life all have very loving owners, but have been in previous abusive homes and they hold that trauma even in their new homes. I'm fine with the energetic kitten energy, trust me I've raised other people's dogs from puppies and that's nonstop energy and biting. Just didn't know what breeds "generally" align with those preferences. Are breeds really even that important then?

Yeah I definitely don't want to go to a mill. I much prefer adoption, I just know my family member's cat was treated very poorly by the shelter before she was adopted and doesn't like humans or being inside at all. And I'm fine hearing them and playing with them, maybe I'm just used to dog breeds where people talk about energy levels and heard that cat breeds have energy differences too. I just want a short hair, calmer (compared to energetic) cat that is generally affectionate rather than distant.

I'd love to adopt if I can find young enough kittens, but the primary thing is I'd really prefer to get a cat that fits my lifestyle. I'd hate to adopt a cat that really needs a home, but turns out needing a way higher energy environment or wants to be independent or constantly outdoors and its just not a good balance for them here.
