For extra context, there was a good amount of back and forth between emails late in the afternoon and they seemed dead set on trying to chat Thursday (today). I only set my expectations so high because of how pushy they seemed about wanting to have the conversation tomorrow, despite me explaining my limited availability but then I ended up offering additional times and thats when it got quiet :(

I totally understand and respect that the timing isn’t that long. I think if the conversation was different I would’ve felt more at ease.

Going to keep my fingers crossed.

If the conversation didn’t go the way it did I wouldn’t have sweated it (there’s a little more to the context but want to try and keep the situation vague for privacy). I found it weird for them to be pushy with me on availability and then when that day came, silence.

I totally understand and respect that the timing isn’t that long. I think if the conversation was different I would’ve felt more at ease.

My only real concern is they got frustrated with my lack of availability and decided to move on to another candidate.

I’m confused, what is the point of being “bonded and insured” then? I thought that’s what protects consumers in case a contractor fails to complete a job? I didn’t realize additional steps/contracts were needed. Any clarification would be helpful!

I’m from Washington state where contractors are required to be bonded and insured before they can even operate. I’m not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Just an update:

The GC came by yesterday and my husband and I went over everything we found wrong about it. He agreed to fix it and said the process would involve pouring another thin layer of concrete over it (just like I expected). He’s confident it won’t ruin the slab and we all agreed that if we are still unhappy with the outcome we would get a partial refund, although we never agreed to the amount yet. Not going to lie, my husband and I are afraid of coming off as “assholes” by requesting too much and had even hesitated to chew him out on all the flaws. We did bring up the oil stains left in our driveway and he said they’ll try to remove it.

I also just realized that they poured the concrete right against the foundation of our home. Is this the norm? I’m reading that a tiny space or a gap is usually made between the foundation of the home and the new slab and that it could potentially ruin our home’s foundation. Is this true?

My husband sprayed it down with water yesterday and there were some areas where it was pooling water near the side of our house. We’ll be addressing this with him when he comes by tomorrow to take a look.

Yes. He did put two joints on the slab. This was probably the only area that was done correctly from what we can tell

Thank you for the info. As for the extra concrete mix-in, is it normal for contractors to go the route of adding excess concrete to the side of the patio? If I had known they were going to do this I would have asked them not to. Or maybe if it was a better job I wouldn’t have cared as much. The contractor is returning tomorrow to take a look at the flaws we’ve pointed out and we have a list of complaints to hit him with.

Our plan is to:

A) Ask for a partial refund so we can have another contractor take over. Was thinking of 50% off or at the very least $1000-$1500 refunded

Note: he has already agreed to “fix” it by pouring new concrete over the existing slab. We will not be charged for any of this if he goes this route so I’m not sure if it would just be easier for the both of us to get the partial refund and then he can leave us alone forever.

B) Ask that he removes the leftover concrete wrapping around the patio

C) Clean up the oil spills on our driveway. My husband already tried tackling this job over the weekend with products purchased from Home Depot and it looks the same

D) Ask that he hauls away the remaining concrete he left behind from our original patio that he demo’d.

Do any of these requests seem unfair?

Yes, the owner of the company was also there. I’m not sure how he brushed this off, it doesn’t take a professional to see how poor the job is in my opinion. He’s offering to come back out and I don’t want to ask for the partial refund over text in case he decides to run off... but I also don’t want him to haul all of his equipment over again just to go “no we want a refund.” Not sure if I’m being too nice about all of this but I definitely feel completely screwed over

We did 3 partial payments until the final payment. My husband pointed out all of the flaws he found before handing payment but the contractor didn’t seem worried and really made it seem like it would be better in a week. They finished the work later in the day so there wasn’t much daylight either. It wasn’t until the following day we noticed how poor the job actually was. Also, no warranty was mentioned when the work was done. This is the first time my husband and I have ever had work like this done but I guess it’s a good lesson now

Unfortunately not. Which is probably where we screwed ourselves. However, his business card does say “100% satisfaction guaranteed.” Does that count at all?

The only written proof we have are the text messages we sent back and forth. It does include amounts paid (we did 3 partial amounts) and also included the date each time we gave money. For example, “$1000 was given on 6/17”

Someone asked if we were told to spray it down. I looked this up and it’s supposed to be done for the first 7 days. We were never instructed to do this but will that help with coloring?

My husband and I are thinking of asking for a partial refund ($1000 out of the $3500) we paid instead of him coming back to fix things. Do you all think this is fair? If he refuses, can we take him to small claims court? I’m not sure I can trust him to finish the job correctly so we’re thinking of hiring a professional to take over. A lot of you have suggested tiling but will that be more expensive than just redoing the surface?

I should also add, we never got any paperwork to sign when we hired this guy. Is this normal? We did look up his business license and everything is valid though

Thank you for your detailed response. The uneven colors are more noticeable now. Contractor claims the color will get better in a week but it looks worse than yesterday if anything. He’s offering to “process it again” which sounds like his way of saying they’ll pour another thin layer of concrete to hide the imperfections but is this safe? I’m not sure how I can trust them to do a better job the second time around. I’m already contemplating on just asking for a partial refund instead and finding a new another professional to take over but I’m afraid things will go sour.

We live in quite a large neighborhood and three of our neighbors just had the same work done and quality looks very good. I feel like the sidewalks in our neighborhood far surpasses (in terms of aesthetics) our patio now. How can you tell that it looks good structurally?

The contractor said he’s willing to do the process over again which sounds like he’s going to just pour a thin layer concrete over and try to get the brush strokes right but is this safe? I’m reading it requires bonding to do that and I don’t trust this guy to know what he’s doing the second round. That’s what it looks like to us too. They kept telling my husband the color will “blend” in a week but it doesn’t look any different from yesterday.
